The Overwatch League announced on Twitter today that Zarya’s MVP skin is now available to purchase in the game. The alien skin costs 200 Overwatch League tokens, which is the equivalent of $9.99
Jay ‘Sinatraa’ Won, the 2019 MVP in the Overwatch League, spent the majority of his MVP campaign playing Zarya, so the MVP skin should belong to Zarya. Before the 2-2-2 lock in the Overwatch League, Zarya was a dominant meta hero in the triple tank triple support composition. Sinatraa was a vital part of The San Francisco Shock’s 2019 season, where they went to all three stage-finals, and winning the Overwatch League grand finals over the Vancouver Titans.
Sinatraa’s 2019 individual performance was one of the best individual performances in sports that year. In addition to winning the Overwatch League MVP and grand finals, he also helped Team USA win their first Overwatch World Cup, and was named World Cup MVP. Sinatraa shocked the Overwatch world in 2020 when he announced his retirement from the game to pursue a career in VALORANT. Sinatraa currently plays and creates content for Sentinels.
It is always nice to see professional players immortalized in the game they spend so many hours practicing and perfecting. In 2018, Jjonak received his Zenyatta MVP skin. The season one winners, The London Spitfire, were honored with a team inspired Winston skin, and the San Francisco Shock received a Doomfist skin. It was nice to see Sinatraa come back for the reveal video. It shows that there is no ill-will between the Overwatch staff and Sinatraa after he left to play VALORANT.
The Overwatch League has had a down 2020. COVID-19 canceled all of the Overwatch League homestand events. Many of the pro players have retired from the game. There have been several adjustments to the league format as a result of going to an online format. However, last month’s May Melee was received positively by the community, and hero pools have been adjusted for the Summer Showdown. Things seem to be heading in the right direction for the league, and the positive momentum of professional Overwatch should help leading into the release of Overwatch 2.
