It’s been 21 years since Worms Armageddon first launched, but the classic game of invertebrate warfare is still getting support. Team17 launched this version of the Worms franchise way back in 1990, and they clearly have as much love for the title as the fans do. While newer versions have been released, including the upcoming Worms Rumble, the sheer size of this update for such an old game is almost unprecedented.

This update, version 3.8, came as a surprise to basically everyone. Team17’s official website lists the release notes to contain 370 fixes, 45 changes, and 61 new features. The most notable change is the “Extended Scheme Options” which gives players 70 brand new ways to customize their games through adjusting with things like physics, how many weapons can be fired in a single turn, and tons more options to play with. The frame rate, which was previously capped at 50 FPS, can now be pushed as far as your computer can handle.

The game now supports windowed mode and new tools made specifically for people looking to stream the game, such as hiding IP addresses while streaming. Players can now matchmake against CPUs online, or pit them against one another in a simulated battle. The last major change is the new compatibility updates that make Worms Armageddon run better for Windows 10 users, and those running Wine or Proton on Linux systems.

Game support typically sees a sharp decline after a sequel, or several sequels, are released, but Team17 is proving just how dedicated they are to the early games that helped build their community. It’s been 7 years since the last update, but this update represents changes fans have wanted for a very long time.

Making influential games like this more accessible, whether through language options or improved support on more platforms, is important in preserving games for future generations. If you missed Worms Armegeddon or haven’t played it in awhile, now is the perfect time to check it out.
