A lot has happened since this console generation began in 2013. The shift of power in the console race, the rise of streaming, a new genre called battle royale, and upgraded consoles (just to name a few). In short: games have continued to evolve and grow. If you think about it, there hasn’t been a bad year for games since the generation began. It has only gotten better. Sure, the launch lineup of games wasn’t as great as the games we are getting now, and games nowadays go through the micro-transaction debate, but the games themselves are better than ever.

The early games of the generation showcased how good games can look with the new hardware. As time went on, the scope increased as well. Within the first two years of the PlayStation 4’s lifecycle, we got games like Bloodborne and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. A year later, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. In 2017, PS4 gamers were graced with the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, and Persona 5. Very different games that are all great in their own ways. Gamers have been getting lucky with all of the amazing games. 2018 has been a great year so far as well, but it isn’t over. E3 was last month and it gave us a glimpse of what we’ll be playing in the future. Here are some games that you’ll be able to play for the PlayStation 4.

22 Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4

Every year, we get some of the same things. Every year there is a new version of every sports game in EA’s catalog, and every year, a new Call Of Duty comes out. This year, we get Treyarch’s Call Of Duty, from their popular Black Ops series. On October 12, 2018, gamers can get their hands on Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4. The interesting thing about Call Of Duty this year is their focus on multiplayer, forgoing a single-player experience altogether. Another big thing to pay attention to is a new mode called Blackout, which is Call Of Duty’s take on battle royale.

21 Hitman 2

2016 saw the release of Hitman — a stealth game that did things very differently. Notably: the game released its vignettes episodically. Whether you agree with that design philosophy or not, everyone in the gaming community was very positive about the latest release in the franchise.

The levels were large and complex giving players a variety of options that they could explore when completing their assignments. Hitman 2 releases on November 13, 2018, and fans of the series should be pleased that it will be very similar to the first game. Unlike the first game, they will be releasing a full game, not episodically as before.

20 Overkill’s The Walking Dead

Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a different kind of zombie game. It’s from the developers of Payday which signals it being a co-op game (which it is). Set in Washington, Overkill’s The Walking Dead allows gamers to take on the role of distinct characters that have their own unique abilities and attributes. Moreover, the characters have their own backstories that help flush out the game’s plot. The game is set to have a deep progression system, scavenging and crafting, modifications for weapons, and a scalable difficulty. If you’re looking for a co-op zombie experience, this one is set to release on November 6, 2018.

19 Shadow Of The Tomb Raider

When Tomb Raider 2013 came out, the first game in this new trilogy, it marked a shift in the character of Lara Croft. The first game —and its sequel— were all about how she developed the skills and experience to become the tomb raider. Shadow Of The Tomb Raider is Lara’s final step. Releasing September 14, 2018, gamers will experience Lara Croft’s defining moment. Developed by Eidos’ Montreal studio, we can’t wait to see how the third installment shakes things up.

18 Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

The Assassin’s Creed series saw a resurgence with Assassin’s Creed Origins. The franchise desperately needed a year off to recoup lost fans — and the strategy worked. That being said, it seems like we’re back to an annual cycle with Odyssey. But if it’s as good as Origins was, no one will be complaining about more AC. With Assassin’s Creed Odyssey set to release on October 5, 2018, we’re excited to see how Ubisoft keeps things fresh this time out.

17 Fallout 76

Fallout 76 caught everyone off guard, not because it’s another Fallout, but because of the new direction they’re taking the series. The game is set at the very start of the Fallout timeline and —believe it or not— will be an online multiplayer experience. I’m sure every gamer is curious how that’ll work. Fallout 76 releases November 14, 2018. Bethesda have been pretty clear that if you want to play alone, that will be an option, but since you’ll still be connected to a persistent online world, we’re not sure how well that will pan out for antisocial gamers.

16 Divinity: Original Sin 2

Just like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Divinity: Original Sin 2 has been regarded as one of the best role-playing games ever made. That being said, these two games are very different.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is an old-school computer-style RPG.

You have a wide breadth of customizable options to play with and a lot of granular stats to control. Also, any choice you make in the game can affect the world in some way. It’s a massive game that released last year on PC. It’s coming to consoles on August 31, 2018. If you want to experience what critics call one of the best RPGs of all time, then you may want to check it out.

15 Destiny 2: Forsaken

On September 4, 2018, gamers can get their hands on the next expansion of Destiny. In the same vein as The Taken King, Forsaken is being regarded as a big expansion that’ll make everybody fall in love with Destiny again.

From how some weapons will work, to the new game modes, and nine new supers, there is will be a lot for gamers to sink their teeth into. Fingers-crossed there will be enough new content to keep us playing longer than the base game.

14 Battlefield V

Battlefield 1 was a very popular Battlefield game when it came out. It made something old feel fresh and new again. Battlefield also changed how they tell their stories, crafting bite-sized experiences, rather than a full-featured narrative.

Battlefield V is sticking to that formula.

With V, they’ll be telling small war stories to serve as its campaign. As always, Battlefield ’s multiplayer will put an emphasis on teamwork, and feature destructible environments to play around in. Battlefield V releases October 16, 2018.

13 Spyro: Reignited Trilogy

Remasters are nothing new, especially this generation of consoles. However, there have been some that have garnered more attention than others. Earlier this year, Shadow of the Colossus was re-released again. The big difference this time is that the game has been built from the ground up using the hardware of the PS4.

In 2017, Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy was released, also made from the ground up for the PS4. On September 21, 2018, Spyro makes his return in the Reignited Trilogy.

12 Concrete Genie

Concrete Genie looks like a truly unique experience. The game centers around Ash, a troubled teenager who escapes their woes through art. Armed with a magical paintbrush, and the ability to bring his artwork to life, Ash sets out to breath color into the world. The game takes advantage of the PS4’s motion tracking technology as players get to create their world by moving the controller around. Players will be able to custom build an array of projects from scratch, giving the world its own unique personality. The game is set to release sometime in 2018.

11 The Walking Dead: The Final Season

Fans of Telltale Games have something big to look forward to. The final season of The Walking Dead is finally upon us. The Walking Dead jumpstarted Telltale Games’ onslaught of cinematic adventure games, and the finale is sure to close off Clementine’s story in a spectacular fashion.

However, gamers and critics alike have criticized the studios’ dated engine. With any luck, this latest season of the franchise will fix some of the woes that plagued the original releases. The Walking Dead: The Final Season set to release on August 14, 2018.

10 Lego DC Super-Villains

Lego games are always fun, they possess a certain charm that brings everyone together. Over the years, they have added voiceover work to the characters, and have had fun playing with the source material. Since the video games have been around for a while, they must be doing something right. On October 16, 2018, You can get your hands on the next lego game, Lego DC Super-Villains. What makes this game different from the others is the ability to create a character that will be a part of the story.

9 Dragon Quest XI: Echoes Of An Elusive Age

On September 4, 2018, JRPG fans have something huge to look forward to with Dragon Quest XI (which is finally making its debut in the West). The game features a turn-based battle system that makes it easy for new players to get used to, but has the depth that hardcore fans will enjoy. Like the last home console release in the West, it will feature English voice-over work we’re all excited to hear. It’s been a long time since Dragon Quest was on the PlayStation and we can’t wait to see what Square has cooked up.

8 Soul Calibur VI

Soul Calibur has been dormant for a while, so fans of the series were excited when Soul Calibur VI was revealed at the Game Awards in 2017. This is the series’ 20th anniversary and like many fighting games today, Soul Calibur wants to cater to both new players, veterans of the series

For anyone unfamiliar, Soul Calibur is unique in that its combatants use weapons to fight. The newest mechanic, reversal edge, allows players to counter enemy attacks in spectacular cinematic fashion.

7 Yakuza Kiwami 2

Like many other Japanese titles, Yakuza has seen a resurgence recent rebirth on the PlayStation 4. Now, they plan to remaster all the Yakuza games and release them for Sony’s latest home console. As of now, you can play Yakuza 0 (a prequel to the series), Yakuza 6 (the final chapter in Kazuma Kiryu’s story), and Yakuza Kiwami (a remaster of Yakuza 1O). Yakuza Kiwami 2 will release on August 28, 2018. It is a remake of Yakuza 2. Like Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2 will feature a lot of the quality of life enhancements found in Yakuza 6.

6 Just Cause 4

Just Cause is one of those series that’s all about having fun. Using the game’s unique physics system, players can blow things up and create their own fun in the game’s open-world sandbox. Just Cause 4 takes things a step further with a brand-new engine. Chief among the game’s new mechanics are massive tornadoes, that can cause even more chaos and mayhem than ever before. Just Cause 4 is releasing December 4, 2018.

5 Life Is Strange 2

When Life Is Strange came out, no one expected it to be the phenomenal success that it has become. It’s another choice0based adventure game similar to what Telltale’s unique brand of storytelling, but mixed with more nuanced gameplay and an unforgettable cast of characters.

Needless to say, it was an emotional rollercoaster, and fans are anxiously waiting to see what the studio does to follow it up. Life Is Strange 2 is set to release on September 27, 2018.

4 We Happy Few

We Happy Few has a lot in common with Irrational’s 2007 and 2013 sensations: BioShock and BioShock: Infinite. This game is set in a retro-futuristic 1960s England and tells the story of three characters trying to escape Wellington Welles. The game also evokes A Clockwork Orange in its premise with a society controlled by a substance called Joy. The game has (thankfully) been retooled quite a bit since its inital debut on Xbox Game Preview. We Happy Few comes out August 10, 2018.

3 Dreams

It has been several years since Dreams was revealed. Developed by Media Molecule, Dreams is a game where you can create, share, and play. The developers have developed a robust set of tools that enable you to create just about anything you can imagine. ]

This is what makes Dreams so unique, you’re only limited by your imagination.

If you don’t want to create, you have the option to play what others have created. You can also use what others have created as a base, and remix something of your own. Dreams is unique and is set to release in 2018.
