Things have generally been off to a slow start for the PS5. That largely has to do with a global pandemic leading to supply shortages and economic upheaval that’s preventing a lot of people from buying a PS5 even if they could find one, but things might be starting to pick up for Sony’s next-gen console.
Returnal’s arrival marks perhaps the first true next-gen game for the system, showcasing just what the PS5’s hardware can do when a developer puts all its effort into extracting performance from a single console. Although the game is tough as nails, its smooth frame rate and beautiful visuals are truly unique for the platform–so far.
According to PlayStation Worldwide Studios head Hermen Hulst recently spoke with Wired about the PlayStation 5’s future, and he revealed that there are 25 new first-party titles currently in development. On top of that, almost half of them are for brand new IPs.
“There’s an incredible amount of variety originating from different regions,” Hulst said. “Big, small, different genres.”
Hulst didn’t say just what those upcoming games are, but we already know a few, namely Stray, Kena: Bridge of Secrets, God Of War: Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. We’re speculating, but recent job postings for Insomniac Games reveal that Ghost of Tsushima 2 might actually be made someday, and Days Gone 2 is currently in the “petition stage” of early development.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift is probably the next big first-party title that’ll put the PS5 on a pedestal. Arriving on June 11, the game will feature ray tracing so precise that some reflections will only be visible in photo mode. And to take advantage of the PS5’s advanced spatial audio, Insomniac hired Thor: Ragnarok’s composer to give the game an epic soundtrack.
