We just got our first look at Halo: Reach for the PC, and it is coming along quite nicely.

Last week, 343 Industries provided us with an update on how The Master Chief Collection is coming along. Announced last March to be coming for PC via Steam, the first game to arrive as part of the Collection would be Halo: Reach, chronologically the first Halo game in the series. It’s also the first to be given the Master Chief treatment to be completely remade for PC in beautiful 4K.

And 343 has certainly remade the game in beautiful 4K.

Developer Eric Ferdinand and Design Director Max Szlagor showed off the first 40 minutes or so or Halo: Reach’s campaign starting with the very first combat encounter with The Covenant. Ferdinand did a pretty good job of showing off Reach’s new graphics, only dying that one time to an errant Covenant blast.

As this was still an early build, the UI is expected to receive enhancements before release. Also, PC settings are expected to include things like a FOV slider and other graphical settings to allow a player to tweak Reach to perform well on their specific PC. The promise of 4K and 60 FPS for high-end rigs is real, however, and the recent livestream proves it.

Also announced in an accompanying blog post was dedicated server support for Reach’s co-op campaign mode as well as Firefight, which basically pits players against endless waves of enemies. Additionally, servers will use a new “asynchronous” model to match players and provide a much smoother experience.

“Firefight matchmaking will be hosted on dedicated servers and use a new asynchronous network model. Co-op Campaigns and Firefight have always run on a synchronous model where clients have to wait for the host to simulate their actions and send them back before they can be observed by the client. This can result in a sense of sluggishness for off-host players,” explains 343 in their blog post.

“Reach Firefight in MCC will use an async model which should result in a much smoother and more consistent online experience.”

We still don’t have word on when Reach will release, but E3 is right around the corner, so expect news on that soon. Also, Microsoft Insiders will get their chance at early beta testing in the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for that too.
