Next-gen is finally out and there are some impressive titles available, permitting someone manages to obtain a PS5 or Xbox Series X. There’s lots of value to be found in the Xbox Game Pass and PS5 has a few timed exclusives (that will eventually come to PC) well worth experiencing. However, following Cyberpunk 2077’s broken release, the horizons for upcoming game releases have acquired new perspectives.
There are some franchises or genres that can always be relied upon to release a game or two, no matter the console generation, such as popular sports titles or first-person shooters. However, there are a few special games worth looking out for.
Disclaimer: A game only has to be confirmed for or coming out on one of the next-gen consoles to be considered.
10 Confirmed – Resident Evil Village
Resident Evil Village was one of the most exciting games to be announced back when PlayStation came out with its PS5 reveal. Luckily, sometime in 2021, this title will be available also on PC and next-gen Xbox consoles.
Following the success of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, this game serves as the new major installment in the horror series and also as a direct sequel to its predecessor. Ethan Winters, Biohazard’s protagonist, returns alongside his wife Mia, enjoying a new life away from the horrors of their past. However, a new nightmare awaits Ethan, and fans can only imagine what he will have to face this time.
9 Rumored – Silent Hills
Nothing feels as bad as building up hope for this release and finding out it might not actually be in the works. If you attentively follow news relating to Hideo Kojima, you would know he hinted at the possibility of working on a horror game in this Tweet, back in 2019. Other than this, there have been a few more rumors that possibly confirm Silent Hills is not dead.
At one point Kojima came in contact with horror manga artist Junji Ito, but Ito clarified they were casually talking about working together. Then, the same person who leaked God Of War: Ragnarok (and was right in their prediction) also hinted that Silent Hills is on its way. Whether this game is actually being worked on or not remains to be seen, but the gaming community certainly wants this title to exist.
8 Confirmed – Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon Zero Dawn had a successful release and formed a solid reputation for this new IP. It’s good to see this title receive a sequel, which will come out in 2021 as a cross-gen RPG, available on both PS5 and PS4.
Horizon Forbidden West follows Aloy’s story, as she ventures on a quest to find the source of a mysterious disease that kills all it infects. Fans can expect everything they loved for the previous title to be expanded on in this one.
7 Rumored – Metal Gear Solid Remake
Another rumor that came from the person who leaked God Of War: Ragnarok is the possible release of a Metal Gear Solid remake. According to this leaker, the game is being worked on by Bluepoint Games, who recently released Demon’s Souls for the PS5 and did a fantastic job with it.
Following the terrible reception that stemmed from Metal Gear Survive, fans of the series have been crossing their fingers and hoping that Snake will return. If there is one lesson to be learned from years and years of building up expectations as Cyberpunk 2077 did, it is that it’s best to reveal a game when it’s ready. Therefore, it might be for the best that a Metal Gear remake is not confirmed yet.
6 Confirmed – Halo Infinite
Master Chief finally returns on Xbox and PC in the later part of 2021. Halo Infinite was initially set to release this past November, but it was delayed due to the current global situation. As the trailer was rough around the edges, Halo Infinite needed more time to cook.
This should have been one of the launch titles to come out with the Xbox Series X, but unfortunately, that was not the case. Hopefully, 343 Industries is making the most of this delay, as rushed games never end up being good.
5 Rumored – Call Of Duty Modern Warfare Sequel
You can always expect a new Call Of Duty, you just don’t know what it will be about. Now that Cold War is out, it would make sense if the Modern Warfare series received a new installment (since the franchise is fond of alternating between Black Ops and Modern Warfare).
According to leaker Tom Henderson, referenced in this Screen Rant article, the next COD will have a modern-day setting. Therefore, neither the past (like Cold War’s setting) nor the future (think Black Ops 4 or Infinite Warfare) should be considered, thus designating Modern Warfare as the most likely title in the series.
4 Confirmed – The Elder Scrolls VI
A massive success, Skyrim has been ported to most systems that can run it, including the Nintendo Switch. That was great, at least until it became apparent there would be no new numbered Elder Scrolls game on eighth-generation consoles. That was until the very brief announcement teaser for The Elder Scrolls VI was released by Bethesda Softworks back in 2018.
The teaser came with a description that stated the game was in pre-production, so it’s safe to expect that it will still take years before completion (especially since the pandemic slowed everything down). Nonetheless, the gaming community strongly expects the game to come out during the PS5 and Xbox Series X era.
3 Rumored – Next Witcher Game
There are more than enough rumors on the Internet about the next Witcher game. CD Projekt Red is undoubtedly interested in doing something with the franchise at some point, though Geralt’s return seems unlikely (thus excluding the possibility of calling the next game “The Witcher 4”).
This bit of news comes from CD Projekt Red’s CEO Adam Kiciński, who stated this past March that a Witcher game would begin development after Cyberpunk 2077’s release. Considering the terrible release Cyberpunk achieved, who knows if the developer should even consider devoting time to a new game when their latest one is unplayable on PS4 and Xbox One.
2 Confirmed – Starfield
Starfield is part of the reason why The Elder Scrolls VI is taking so long since the developer needs to finish Starfield first. Expected to release in 2021 at the earliest, Starfield is an ambitious space-drive RPG that will contain traditional elements typical of Bethesda games.
As far as what else can be expected from this title, everything remains under wraps. Nonetheless, the game was announced back at 2018’s E3, so it’s safe to bet that you will be able to play this on your next-gen console (if the recent Microsoft acquisition of Bethesda will allow cross-platform releases).
1 Rumored – Grand Theft Auto VI
Rockstar neither confirmed nor teased a possible sequel to Grand Theft Auto V. Nonetheless, the gaming community and GTA fans anticipate the next entry in the series to release at some point, and they are looking anywhere for clues.
Nothing tangible exists yet. GTA Online is still thriving with new updates that have been coming out since the game’s release in 2013. Luckily, fans can at least anticipate the re-release of GTA V for next-gen to come out in the second half of 2021.
