As many might have suspected, yesterday’s Ubisoft Forward live stream mainly focused on titles that were due to release this fiscal year. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion, and Hyper Scape were the major talking points with a few mobile titles thrown in. They did announce one new game, Far Cry 6, but just about everyone knew that was coming so it wasn’t that big of a surprise.
There were a lot of games that were suspiciously absent from the press conference. There will be another Forward sometime later this year but until that happens we still have a lot of questions about many of Ubisoft’s franchises. So here’s some of the series that we’re still waiting to hear about and the latest news and rumors about their development.
Beyond Good And Evil 2
It’s the sequel that we’ve been waiting nearly 17 years for and we’re still mostly clueless about. It’s been so long that we managed to get a new Half-Life game before we got a Beyond Good And Evil follow-up! All we’ve wanted were the continuing adventures of Jade and her anthropomorphic pals. Instead, it’s apparently grown into some massive multiplayer game that serves as a prequel to the series. Except that Jade is also in it and possibly the villain? It’s all terribly confusing and we got nothing resembling clarification last night.
Latest News: Previously, the last update happened four months ago and only featured news about their HITRECORD partnership. However, as of yesterday, the team behind BGAE2 posted on Ubisoft’s website stating that they had no new gameplay footage to show. But, they’ve reassured everyone that the game is still in development and moving forward. It’s just taking a very long time.
Gods & Monsters
This title was announced last year and since then there hasn’t been much in the way of news about it. So far, all we know about Gods & Monsters is that it will be some kind of open-world game centered around Greek mythology. Of course, most of Ubisoft’s output seems to be open-world titles so based on their history we can probably imagine what this will play like. It does look very pretty, but we just want to know what kind of climbable towers will be in it.
Latest News: An unfinished build of Gods & Monsters somehow leaked onto Google Stadia as a demo titled Orpheus back in June. Ubisoft has since stated that this build wasn’t representative of the final product. While it didn’t show up in Ubisoft Forward, they have said that the game will be shown off sometime this summer and that it will be receiving a new name.
Skull & Bones
Once again, there was no love for Ubisoft’s long-missing pirate game. There wasn’t even a hint of its existence. We still have very little to go on other than its 2018 E3 trailer. At this point, you would think that the team behind Skull & Bones would have some kind of update. Yet, here we are in 2020 and there’s still nary a word about Ubisoft’s pirate plans.
Latest News: The last news update on Ubisoft’s website for Skull & Bones was December 21, 2018, which isn’t a good sign. They’ve also been quiet on social media. In 2019, a TV pilot based on the game was announced to be made by Atlas Entertainment with The Mist’s Amanda Segel set to write and produce. The game hasn’t been officially canceled and is currently slated to release sometime during 2021/2022. Regardless, the silence about the project is deafening.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle 2
As of right now, we have no proof that a sequel to Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle exists. However, considering the overwhelmingly positive response it received from critics and fans it would be hard to see why they wouldn’t make a second installment of the game. It’s possible that instead of announcing it during Ubisoft Forward it’s being saved for a future livestream from Nintendo, but there’s no evidence that says for sure that more tactical Rabbids action is forthcoming.
Latest News: Based on a job listing for a 3D animator, there have been rumors that Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle developer Ubisoft Milan is working on a mysterious new project. Nothing has come from this news as of yet, but it’s very plausible that it could be Kingdom Battle 2. It could also be just about anything else.
Splinter Cell
The last Splinter Cell game was Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which was released in 2013. That means that Sam Fisher somehow sat out the entirety of this console generation. Of course, he did make cameos here and there, including appearances in Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint. He even showed up in Ubisoft Forward….As a character in Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad, a mobile game that seems to feature a whole cast of Tom Clancy game all-stars (here’s hoping that you can play as a jet from HAWX.) Other than that, the Splinter Cell series is seemingly on ice, which is an absolute travesty.
Latest News: Gamers may have gotten excited last night when Splinter Cell was trending on Twitter. Unfortunately, that wasn’t about a new game in the franchise. It was about disgruntled Splinter Cell fans sending angry tweets to Ubisoft about Sam Fisher being stuck in a mobile game rather than starring in a new game of his own. As of this writing, there is said to be no new Splinter Cell project in development. It’s a sad time for fans of stealth action and Michael Ironside’s voice.
Maybe They’ll All Be Mentioned In The Next Ubisoft Forward
There is another Ubisoft Forward coming sometime later this year so there’s a possibility that at least one of these missing franchises will receive some kind of official update. We’ll just have to see what they have in store for us whenever that livestream occurs.
