Early April WWE 2K cancelled in favor of something new. Then at the end of April, 2K released the trailer for their new project ‘WWE Battlegrounds’ scheduled for release in fall 2020.
Similar 2011’s WWE All Stars, 2K’s yearly released WWE game is driving a beer truck in a different direction this year with a more animated, arcade version of their usual realistic and visually impressive installment in the series which mirrors the NBA 2K series in gameplay.
While John Cena, Becky Lynch, The Rock and a handful of other WWE superstars have already been showcased through the game’s inaugural trailer, here are 5 Male Superstars We Want To See In WWE Battlegrounds (& 5 Female Superstars We Want).
11 “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt
This past year, Bray Wyatt has had yet another career resurgence. He has developed one of the most fascination characters ever seen in the company or business. From his countless puppets, his split personality persona as the innocent Bray Wyatt to his unique and often terrifying look when he reveals himself as the masked fiend.
With one of the key themes in WWE Battlegrounds appearing to include unique environments in which matches take place, a Firefly Fun House match would certainly add something new and different to the experience in any wrestling video game.
10 Trish Stratus
One of the most successful female wrestlers in the 2000’s, Stratus paved the way for countless women in the business today. The Canadian caught the attention of Vince McMahon and the WWE while on the cover of MuscleMag International and debuted with the company in 2000. Stratus retired in 2005 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013.
9 Goldberg
Following a brief appearance in the National Football League as a former defensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Rams and Carolina Panthers, Bill Goldberg would go on to become one of the biggest, if not the biggest star in World Championship Wrestling in the 1990’s. In 2001, World Championship Wrestling would be bought by Vince McMahon and the WWE. The 2018 Hall of Famer would go on to become a world champion in four separate decades - 1998, 2003, 2017 and 2020.
8 Chyna
During WWE’s most successful time, few individuals stood out from the overcrowded roster than Chyna. Beginning her wrestling career in he late 90’s, she stood as a body guard for Triple H and D-Generation X. She became the first female to enter a Royal Rumble match, qualify for the King of the Ring tournament and becoming the first and only woman to capture the Intercontinental Championship.
Her legacy remains prevalent today with several women mirroring the physique and style Chyna once owned. Prior to 2019’s WWE 2K20, the 9th Wonder of the World hadn’t appeared in a WWE video game for 19 years.
7 Paige
Debuting in the WWE development brand NXT in 2012, Paige became the youngest female to win the Divas Championship in 2014 during her debut on WWE RAW. Unfortunately in 2018, she would have to step back from in ring competition due to past injuries however still remains active with a weekly on screen role as of this 2020.
6 Triple H
A man who holds more nicknames than any other WWE superstar in history, Triple H is one of the most successful wrestlers to ever step inside the ring and no, it has nothing to do with marrying the boss’s daughter.
Debuting over 30 years ago, The Game currently sits as a fourteen-time world heavyweight champion. Though he currently holds the longest job title on the roster as the Executive Vice President of Global Talent Strategy & Development, Hunter still shows up once in awhile to broadcast NXT talent, harass Michael Cole on commentary, or Pedigree anybody standing across from him inside the ring.
With his first appearance in a video game being in 1996 and his latest being in 2019, it is incredibly likely that we’ll see some form of the King of Kings entered into the upcoming project.
5 Ronda Rousey
Though her time within the company was short lived, the former UFC champion made a significant impression over the women’s roster. In 2018, she would begin her run as one of the most dominant women in history. Following her in ring debut at Wrestlemania, Rowdy Ronda would capture the women’s championship in August at SummerSlam.
Ultimately Rousey would leave the company following her first loss at Wrestlemania however the rowdy one left a massive impact on the women’s roster. Including Rousey would give fans the opportunity to arm bar half of the roster surrounded by alligators, or perhaps to take on the rowdy one in an attempt to defeat one of the most dominant female performers in WWE’s history.
4 Rob Gronkowski
Just kidding.
3 Brock Lesnar
In 2002, Lesnar would debut with the WWE and within five months would defeat Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson to become the youngest WWE Undisputed Champion in history. In 2004, The Beast left the company to pursue a career in the National Football League and soon after would step inside the octagon to become the UFC Champion.
The mayor of Suplex City would make his return to the squared circle in 2012 and has since been one of the most dominant superstars since becoming the would heavyweight champion on multiple occasions.
2 Lita
At the beginning of 2000, most female competitors relayed more on their looks and a certain appeal rather than what they could actually do inside the ring. Amy Dumas not only stood out from the packed women’s roster, she could hold her own in the ring against any gender. She was no stranger to climbing ladders, falling through tables or getting into arguments with a pair of chair swinging Dudley Boys.
Joining the Hall of Fame in 2014, the four-time women’s champion hasn’t been left out of WWE 2K’s series in recent memory having not missed out on the yearly released game since 2012.
1 The Undertaker
The Undertaker is arguably the greatest WWE superstar of all time. Debuting with the company in 1990 and still performing periodically today. The Phenom has always stood out in the gaming world based on his character and appearance. It’s essentially a lock that the American Badass will find his way into the latest WWE video game as he’s found himself consistently involved in the majority of them since 1992.
The Deadman is also no stranger to introducing the WWE Universe to unique match types which could also be included into 2K’s latest project. He’s originated the Buried Alive Match and most recently the Boneyard Match which took place at this year’s Wrestlemania.
