With the next generation less than a month away, many gamers are curious about how their favorite games will perform on the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Frame rate is an important aspect to consider because it allows for a smoother experience and minimizes input lag. On the other hand, a lower frame rate lets developers put more support into visual fidelity.

For example, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales: Ultimate Edition will likely sacrifice ray tracing for its 4K/60 FPS performance mode. FPS is all over the place for the upcoming generation with some games at 30, most at 60, and a few at 120. It may be difficult to keep track of everything so we’ve created a list of some of the more popular games and their frame rates. Any game qualifies, from exclusives to boosted PS4 and Xbox One games.

10 120 FPS: Gears 5 Multiplayer

While the Xbox Series S and X version of Gears 5’s cinematics will hit 60 FPS for the campaign, the multiplayer will be 120 FPS.  This is a good compromise because high frame rates are most desired in the competitive shooter arena. Altogether, the Gears 5 multiplayer experience will be smoother, and less choppy for Xbox Series S and X players. Obviously, higher frame rates have an advantage online, but Gears 5 will still be cross-play with the previous generation.

9 60 FPS: God Of War

Previously at 30 FPS, God of War will be optimized for the PS5 at, up to, 60 FPS. This, especially since it’s available through the PlayStation Plus Collection, is a great incentive to give Kratos and Atreus’ journey another spin. Keep in mind, the phrase “up to.” It’s likely that God of War will near 60 FPS in slower segments and be around 40 in action scenes. Once again, this is an attempt to balance a high frame rate with an outstanding looking game. Whatever your thoughts are on this, at least you’ll be able to carry-save data across generations.

8 120 FPS: Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Halo fans were disappointed when Halo Infinite was delayed to 2021, but the Halo Master Chief Collection should be enough to hold them over. Every game, across multiplayer and campaigns, will be 120 FPS on both the Series S and X. As well as the increased frame rate, players get upgraded split-screen support and adjustable field of view. Halo is Xbox’s premier exclusive, so Microsoft is determined to continue supporting it.

7 60 FPS: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Assassin’s creed Valhalla continues the RPG formula of previous Assassin’s Creed games. It’s focused on Eivor and his Viking crew as they travel through England. One of the main aspects of gameplay is building up a settlement and raiding other settlements for resources.

The 60 FPS announcement has revealed some differences between the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Both versions are 60 FPS, but Valhalla will be upscaled to 4k while Xbox Series X will be native 4k.

6 120 FPS: Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition

Devil May Cry 5 is a great game to have a 120 frame rate. The slasher combat style and intricate combinations are prime for a higher frame rate. It’ll make the experience smoother and more fluid. Capcom also offers you another graphically enhanced version. You can choose to play at 30 FPS and have better visuals. Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition may be the one game where 120 FPS is the ideal mode, because of the intense swordplay and numerous enemies on screen at once.

5 60 FPS: Demon’s Souls

Demon’s Souls released in 2009 and introduced gamers to the intense and rewarding combat of the From Software games. Now Bluepoint Games is remaking Demon’s Souls and it’ll reach 60 FPS on the PS5. This should make the game slightly easier because players will have a faster reaction time. On top of that, load times will be almost instant, making death less infuriating. When you play Demon’s Souls on the PS5, players can get back into the action faster only to die again and again.

4 120 FPS: Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War continues Modern Warfare’s approach to realistic gameplay. That means wall running and double jumps are a thing of the past. Though the game can still be hectic, it’s based more on gunplay and maneuvering. The 120 FPS should help with this and make the game fair for anyone who jumps into a multiplayer match. They can react to enemy fire faster and the game will run at a smoother pace. Hopefully, more competitive shooters will partake in 120 FPS action as well.

3 60 FPS: Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Miles Morales jumps into the next-generation with electrical powers, invisibility, and a Spider-cat. It’s also an introduction to next-generation gaming for many people. As mentioned above, you can choose between a performance mode, 60 FPS, and the standard 30 FPS mode. It’s up to the player to decide based on their preference, but the game will, surely, be beautiful either way. Marvel’s Spider-Man’s New York was one of the prettiest cities on the PS4 and it’ll look even better on the PS5.

2 120 FPS: Ori And The Will Of The Wisps

Microsoft is supporting most of its exclusives across generations with significant upgrades. Ori And The Will Of The Wisps is an Xbox platformer with hand-painted artwork and an orchestral score.

It’s coming to the Xbox Series X with a 120 FPS at 4k. This will make jumping and navigating the world a more stable experience — the best way to play the platformer. Along with the frame rate, the music will also be updated.

1 60 FPS: Immortals Fenyx Rising

Immortals Fenyx Rising is Ubisoft’s attempt to mix The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey into one open-world game. Previously named Gods and Monsters, the game tasks you with saving the Greek Gods and face off with mythical creatures. It will run at 4k and 60 FPS for next-generation consoles and benefit from their power, achieving faster load times and HDR.
