Sony made a huge announcement with the latest Playstation 5 event on Thursday. Letting loose and finally showing off the goodies in a big way. Not only did Sony show off the upcoming games that are hitting the console soon, but they also showcased the console itself.
A couple of big reveals had a lot of fans salivating as the holiday season is approaching and players are finding a way to secure their PS5. As amazing as the presentation was to many gamers, there are still plenty of questions that were left hanging until the next announcement from Sony comes around. So let’s take a look at the 5 things that we have learned about the PS5 and 5 questions we still have on our minds.
10 We Have Learned: There Are Two Console Versions
The speculation was in the air that players would finally see the PS5 console. The DualSense controller made its mark with its reveal that caused a lot of buzz in the air and now the console design had its time to shine – and shine it did.
However, many players were not expecting Sony to reveal two versions of the console. One is the standard physical disc player version and the other is an all-digital version with no disc drive included. This gives players a choice as many people believe that physical copies of video games are a dying breed.
9 Questions We Still Have: When Is The Exact Release Date?
We still feel something was missing from the event. The obvious question to ask is: “When is the release date?” Sony is pushing for a winter release just in time for the holidays. The perfect time of the year for kids to nag their parents to buy the new console.
As eluded to, many titles are to debut in the holiday release window though Sony opted to not reveal the exact date. We can only assume that the release date will eventually be announced in the future nearer the holiday season.
8 We Have Learned: Possible Launch Titles & Games Coming Soon
A bulk of the PS5’s two-hour presentation was devoted to the games that will be coming soon to the console, mostly showcasing the exclusives from the newly created studio called Playstation Studios. Sony revealed some big games that will be arriving between this year and the next.
Sequel titles were revealed, such as the return of Resident Evil horror series with their eighth installment, Resident Evil: Village, and beloved mascots Ratchet and Clank in Rift Apart as well as the anticipated sequel of Horizon: Forbidden West. And let’s not forget Spider-Man: Miles Morales that’s scheduled for a Holiday 2020 release. This could be a possible launch title along with Godfall, which is also scheduled for the same release window.
7 Questions We Still Have: What Is The Price?
Along with the exact date of the PS5 release, Sony kept the price absent from the event. Leaving us to wonder, how much money will we shell out to acquire this bundle of joy? Nothing has been revealed as of yet. Which is a bit disappointing if you want to get a headstart on saving up for its holiday release.
The reasoning could be the pressure of Microsoft, as the Xbox Series X has no price reveal yet. There are reported rumors via Bloomberg about the manufacturing cost of the PS5 to be, “around $450 per unit.”
6 We Have Learned: In-Depth Look Of The DualSense Controller
Debuting months before the release of the recent PS5 event, the DualSense controller was displayed within the 19-minute mark of Sony’s live stream, showcasing a visually appealing look and giving a feel for the controller’s capabilities.
The trailer showed off the various functionalities of the controller including haptic feedback adaptive triggers, motion sensors, and 3D audio. As well as the visual aspects, it displayed the USB port, built-in mic, integrated speakers, and headphone jack.
5 Questions We Still Have: What About VR Support?
Sony took a big dive in the VR market when they introduced the Playstation VR. The headset and peripherals were utilized to tailor the graphics and capabilities to what the Playstation 4 had to offer.
However, the surprising thing lacking from the latest PS5 event was the VR support announcements. Will the current Playstation VR model be utilized for this next console or will we see an entirely different next-gen VR headset in the future? These questions are up in the air, but we should expect an announcement for VR support soon.
4 We Have Learned: New Unique Console Look and Design
The main course of Sony’s showcase event was the new architectural look and design for the PS5. Thus, the many curious mock-ups were put to test and a wave of many memes emerged after its reveal. The design is vastly different from past generations and what players have expected, adding a white color palette on two sides with a waterfall-like strip down the middle.
To round out the design are two accent neon blue ventilation strips flowing down the middle to form a “V” shape. The PS5 stands out with its sleek and futuristic look similar to an Alienware PC or router. It will be very interesting to see what the limited editions will look like to top this elegant “standard” model.
3 Questions We Still Have: What About The User Interface?
The main thing players will utilize when they boot up their new PS5 is the menu screen which will be your ultimate guide to accessing your library of games, movies, TV, and media. We saw perhaps a glimpse of what the PS5 startup screen will look like before the Astro’s Playroom showcase.
However, besides that nothing else was shown about the user interface. From the looks of the startup screen, the menu UI is going to be vastly different. Sony has recently patented the menu user interface, which hints at the possible look and design when accessing the PS5.
2 We Have Learned: The Specs & It’s Capabilities
Sony showcased the incredible power of the PS5 with its Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart demo. A ton of action was displayed on the screen with numerous enemies, environmental changes, and outside interferences of spaceships and other objects. The demo was seamlessly rendered in beautiful textures and graphics and a smooth framerate.
This is possible with the PS5’s ultra-high-speed 825GB custom SSD and boasting a GPU of 10.3 teraflops. The specs of the PS5 also include 8K support and up to 120 frames per second. It’s a big win for gamers and developers as they finally have more freedom to polish and maximize their game’s capabilities without being held back by the console’s limitations.
1 Questions We Still Have: What Is The State Of Backwards Compatibility?
Surprisingly, Sony did not showcase how the PS5’s backwards compatibility will work. Does the functionality work with placing PS4 discs into the disc drive? Or perhaps a library of PS4 games to purchase and download onto the hard drive?
No new details emerged about backwards compatibility besides the news prior to suggesting hundreds of PS4 games will be compatible with the PS5. It would have been nice to see a PS4 game run on the new hardware with enhanced graphics, improved textures, and faster loading times.
