The original Final Fantasy 7 is a massive video game, especially considering it came out on the PS1 in 1997. Despite the JRPG’s large size, the three-disc, more than 40 hour adventure does not tell the whole story about the planet and the overarching conflict. Several spin-offs expand the lore, and these games are of varying quality.

Believe it or not, you could play all of these and still not see every important aspect of the lore. With Final Fantasy 7 Remake opening up the next chapter of the seventh mainline Final Fantasy story, we might see any one of these in the future. Given the wild plot twist at the end of the game, some of these might not happen at all.

8 War Between Shinra Wutai

Wutai is Yuffie’s hometown. With Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade on the way this June, we will probably learn more about the character and Wutai. However, at this point Avalanche’s conflict with the town has long since ended. The most we see of the actual war is in Crisis Core, which showcases its last battle. A whole game could very well take place during this conflict. It is interesting to see Wutai receiving more attention in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, where the war only received a passing mention in the original release.

7 Invasion Of Cosmo Canyon

Red XIII, whose real name is Nanaki, lost his parents in a war and was raised by Bugenhagen. For years he thought his father abandoned him until he learns his father died valiantly fighting an invasion of Cosmo Canyon. Given how Final Fantasy 7 Remake expands on even the smallest aspects of the Midgar chapter, we imagine we’ll see a whole scene of Red XIII’s dad being felled in battle. The scene would now doubt be accompanied by an emotionally wrenching rendition the classic Cosmo Canyon theme.

6 Whatever Ruins Midgar

The original Final Fantasy 7 ends with Red XIII running with what we assume are his children and looking upon a ruined Midgar. In the original game it implies that humanity’s ambiguous fate when Meteor falls is not important; it is more vital to know that the Planet survives.

Sequels like Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus confirm that humanity survives the original game’s ending. Since this is the case, what eventually ruins the city? Does some other calamity eventually come to pass or does humanity consciously abandon the metropolis.

5 President Shinra’s Rise To Power

President Shinra receives significantly more attention in Final Fantasy 7 Remake by virtue of the game’s structure. In the original game he is out of the picture by hour seven or so, but in here he only gets taken out by the last act. We also see more of President Shinra’s history in the museum, which turns out to be a standout part of the assault on Shinra HQ. With more of this information now available, it has us intrigued. We wonder if we will see more of President Shinra’s early years in the future.

4 What Tifa Does After Cloud Meets Aerith

Cloud meets Aerith after quite literally falling into her graces. He only reunites with Tifa and Barret after going to Don Corneo’s estate. This is following the legendary cross-dressing sequence, which is done with a surprising amount of tact and respect in the remake.

In the original, Tifa says they caught an informant hanging around the 7th Heaven Bar. The remake’s story varies slightly. Regardless, we never actually see either of these. The trailer to Yuffie’s episode seems to show Tifa and Barret during the time Cloud spends meeting Aerith, so maybe the DLC chapter will show these scenes.

3 Cetra Civilization

The Cetra are a major part of the lore, but we never actually see these people in their every day lives. The closest we get to seeing them is in Final Fantasy 7 Remake during a documentary Cloud and the party see. This is one cool moment in a sequence of many. Here’s hoping we see some actual flashbacks to this ancient civilization. We could imagine a future game having entire scenes within this world, giving us more insight into how these people were able to use magic.

2 Denzel

Denzel is an orphaned child who Tifa takes care of in Advent Children. We learn more about his backstory in On the Way to a Smile, but this is a novella. We’d love to see a more detailed visual representation of the character’s tragic beginnings. We were honestly surprised we did not see a younger Denzel in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The closest we get to seeing this story is the anime adaptation of On the Way to a Smile, but those are hard to find these days. Maybe he will be in Yuffie’s chapter in Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade. Advent Children is far from the most beloved Final Fantasy 7 story, but it is still undeniably canon.

1 Jenova Landing On Earth

The Cetra were made extinct through an extra-terrestrial calamity called Jenova. Despite this being a key plot point, the games never show this happen. It would be deeply sad and depressing, but also some great fan service. Does the original Jenova who fell from the sky resemble the bosses we fight and the creature we see in the stasis tube in Midgar, or did it look different? Additionally, are there more species like Jenova in the cosmos? That would be bad news for the planet.
