Square Enix recently trademarked the Live A Live name in Europe and Australia, suggesting that the game is either being ported or remastered for modern systems. If the game is being remade, then we might hear an updated version of the track that inspired one of the most famous modern songs in gaming - “Megalovania” from Undertale.

“Megalovania” is a song that can only be heard when pursuing the Genocide route in Undertale, which means that players need to go out of their way to massacre every monster in the game in order to experience it. Once they reach the end of the game, they will have to face off against Sans, in a battle that uses “Megalovania” as its theme. The song has since been remixed and included in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but only to those who purchase the Sans Mii Fighter costume.

“Megalovania” didn’t originate in Undertale. Toby Fox originally used the song for his EarthBound Halloween Hack, where it had a deeper pitch and was used as the final boss theme. Fox later used “Megalovania” in Homestuck, where the song had a tighter production. The version that most fans are familiar with is the one from Undertale, but the song actually had its roots in another track. According to a statement made by Fox on the MSPA Forums, “Megalovania” was his attempt at creating a track from Live A Live, called “Megalomania”. Live A Live was a Super Nintendo game that never left Japan, but many people in Europe and North America had a chance to play it, due to an English fan translation that was available online.

Fox had wanted to use “Megalomania” as the final track for the EarthBound Halloween Hack, but he created a similar song instead. Fox was attempting to evoke the same kind of awesome end boss theme of “Megalomania” with “Megalovania”, and he definitely succeeded at doing it.

If Live A Live is making a comeback, then it will likely be in remastered form, either as an HD 2D remake, or a full 3D remake (similar to Trials of Mana). If so, then the soundtrack will likely be revamped, which means that we might finally get the definitive version of one of the most underappreciated tracks in gaming history.
