Fans have been waiting for the arrival of The Last of Us: Part II with bated breath, but the copy that arrives on store shelves might be a tad bit different than what was originally planned, according to the game’s narrative lead.
The Last of Us: Part II is one of the most anticipated games of 2020, jumping right back into the action of 2013’s The Last of Us. With the sequel only a few days away, Naughty Dog narrative lead Halley Gross spoke to Sector (via Sirus Gaming) about the game’s story and how it adapted over time.
Co-writing Part II was Gross’ first foray into the world of writing games, as the screenwriter is best known for writing episodes of Westworld. Talking to Sector, Gross spoke about Part II’s main themes — the circle of violence and redemption — and how the sequel seeks to depict a realistic post-apocalyptic world with multifaceted characters that are faced with tough decisions and sometimes even tougher consequences.
When asked about the most challenging aspect of developing the game, Gross said that cutting content was the hardest part and admitted that a lot of things didn’t make it into the final version of the game because they didn’t end up matching the story or its themes. This isn’t surprising. Most games we receive look nothing like their initial versions. As games are developed, anything from their story lines to their designs can change.
Fans don’t have too long a wait to find out what’s in store next for Ellie and Joel, as The Last of Us: Part II is set to release on July 19, 2020 for PlayStation 4.
