There’s something about indie games that naturally draws gamers to them. Maybe it’s the out-of-the-box storytelling, compelling visuals, or the fact that just a small amount of people were able to create something so good. One of the indie games that has been taking player’s attention in the last few years is Abzu, a game that focuses on exploring the ocean. Just like in Journey, Abzu has no dialogue; all you need to know is shown to you through exploration of the world and a few cutscenes.
The game was initially released way back in 2016, but it’s one of the games that will be available for free this Spring to Playstation users thanks to the Play At Home program. So if you’re a first-time player or just want to revisit Abzu’s beautiful ocean, here’s every trophy you can collect during your gameplay.
Common Trophies
Breach - Bronze
This trophy is really easy to get, and you can even get it as early as when the game starts. All you have to do to unlock this trophy is “Leap from the water,” which means swimming quickly to the surface, so your character jumps into the air. Press the X or the left-click button before you breach the water to give yourself a boost.
Jetstream - Bronze
The description for this one says that you have to “Burst 15 fish schools in the jetstream”, which means you’ll have to swim through the schools of fish clumped together that you’ll find during the underwater jetstreams scattered throughout the game.
To unlock the trophy, just repeat that action 15 times throughout your playthrough. Keep in mind that you only need to swim towards them to make them move; there’s no need to use the “chirp” button.
Uncommon Trophies
Ballet - Bronze
To unlock this one, you’ll have to “Perform a flip while riding a creature.” This means finding a large sea creature to ride and pressing the O button or E to perform a barrel roll while riding it.
Food Chain - Bronze
This trophy requires you to “Witness predation while meditating.” What you have to do is meditate in one of the shark-like statues scattered through the game, and while you’re sitting there, look around you. By doing so, you’ll be able to watch the different species that call this ocean their home. Just stick around until you see a predatory species (like a shark or a grouper) eating something.
Kraken - Bronze
The description for this one is rather cryptic; it says you have to “Discover those that lurk in the abyss.” But don’t worry, all you have to do to unlock this trophy is say hello to one of the squids that appear at the end of chapter four. Keep in mind that you’ll have to do this once the area is restored and you have released the Kraken.
There is a chance the pressing the square button to say hello isn’t enough to unlock the trophy; if that happens to you, just ride the squid for a little while until the trophy pop-ups on your screen.
Connection - Bronze
This one is pretty self-explanatory. The description says you’ll have to “Ride the Great White Shark.” To unlock this trophy, just ride the Great White Shark that you’ll encounter throughout the game.
You’ll only get the opportunity to ride it during the game’s final chapter but the cool thing is that you can continue to ride it after this moment.
Leviathan - Bronze
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that riding creatures is one of the things Abzu encourages its players to do. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Leviathan trophy asks players to “Breach the water on the back of a blue whale,” which basically means ride one of the whales that appear on the game’s final chapter.
Keep in mind that the whales are enormous and you can’t control them, instead just ride one of them until it leaps from the water.
Reflection - Platinum
You don’t have to do anything extra to unlock this trophy, as it will automatically pop up once you have completed Abzu’s adventure for the first time. So just sit back and relax.
Rare Trophies
Arctic Explorer - Bronze
This one is a very easy-to-miss trophy since it involves discovering a secret area that’s only available at the very end of the game.
To unlock Arctic Explorer, just discover the polar region during chapter seven. Once you’ve reached the open ocean (the same one where you can ride the whale to unlock the Leviathan trophy), don’t take out the final pyramid just yet and instead swim to your left, following the wall. You’ll eventually find the secret area behind the cliff (there’s also a collectible in this area, so keep your eyes wide open).
Ecosystem - Platinum
While exploring Abzu’s ocean, you’ll find pools of fishes scattered throughout the game. There are 20 in total, and some of them are easier to spot than others; keep your eyes open as you’ll have to release the fishes from ALL the hidden pools to unlock the Ecosystem trophy. You’ll find:
- Four during Chapter One Four during Chapter Two Four during Chapter Three Four during Chapter Four Zero during Chapter Five Four during Chapter Six
Zen Master - Platinum
Another one of Abzu’s collectibles are the shark-like statues scattered through the game. You can use them to meditate and have a relaxing time watching the game’s fauna. There are 12 statues in total, and you’ll need to meditate on all of them to unlock the Zen Master trophy.
To make things easier, you can check the ‘Meditate’ menu to check which statues you haven’t discovered yet (however, this menu will only be available after you finish your first playthrough). Keep in mind that there are two statues per chapter (except for Chapter five that has no collectibles in it)
Collector - Gold
Arguably one of the hardest trophies to get in the game is this one, as it requires you to find the 19 shells that are scattered throughout Abzu. You can check which shells you have discovered and which ones you have left just by checking the walls in the room that opens up to you after activating an altar. There are:
- Three shells in the first chapter Three shells in the second chapter Three shells in the third chapter Three shells in the fourth chapter Three shells in the sixth chapter One shell in the seventh chapter
