There’s no better feeling than closely following the development of a game and finally seeing that glorious “1.0” appear next to it in Steam. Fans of Risk of Rain 2 can finally rejoice as the already content-packed game finally sees a full release.
The 1.0 update for Risk of Rain 2 dropped on August 11, bringing with it a slew of new content for players to discover and enjoy. Up until now, there has not been an official ending for the game, but a new level and boss have given the game a conclusive ending for players to work towards.
The game has also released an additional playable survivor. Simply named, “Captain,” he sports a shotgun-rifle hybrid weapon and a bouncing tazer that stuns enemies. Captain can also call down orbital strikes from his dropship, dealing massive damage to enemies while deploying supply beacons to buff himself and teammates.
Captain has an awesome design, but unlocking him is no small feat. Players must travel to the moon where they face off against Mithrix: King of Nothing. This multi-stage boss fight seems like a Dark Souls boss, and poses a formidable challenge to even the most hardened Risk of Rain veterans. Twitch streamer, WoolieGaming, has played the game since release on the hardest difficulty, even going out of his way to set harder challenges for himself. Even he couldn’t beat the boss on the hardest difficulty today, moving the difficulty down in order to unlock Captain.
The update also adds a few new mechanics and items, including a collection of brand new boss items. These are powerful items that can only be obtained from defeating specific bosses, but their drop-chances are fairly low. Players can also now tear down their unwanted items into scrap, which can be traded in for more desirable items later on.
Even though this marks the official release and the fifth content update for Risk of Rain 2, Hopoo Games is far from done with development on the game. Bug fixes and balance patches are likely to come in the coming weeks, and bonus content will be added further down the line.
