It’s taken a whole decade for the original Amnesia: Dark Descent to get a proper sequel in Amnesia: Rebirth. The original game is still highly regarded as one of the most terrifying horror games ever developed and paved the way for other popular horror titles like Alien: Isolation, Outlast, and even Resident Evil VII: Biohazard took some inspiration from Amnesia.
Unlike most survival horror games on consoles, Amnesia: Rebirth doesn’t empower the player in any way shape, or form. There are no weapons for the protagonist Tasi to use in the game and her only defense is to run, hide, and maintain her sanity. With this in mind, it’s always good to go into a horror game like this with some preparation.
10 Play It Your Way
When starting the game of Amnesia: Rebirth the game will tell players that the object isn’t to complete the game like they are setting out on a mission. The goal for the developers was that the player tackles its horrors by being as immersive as possible.
Players that enjoy replay value will be delighted to know that there three endings in the game so tackling the game their way is rewarded. The best way to enjoy Rebirth is by not trying to be perfect but by simply enjoying the horror experience as it’s meant to be played.
9 Stay In The Light
Just like the previous entries in the series, Amnesia: Rebirth is as much a battle against the darkness as it is against the variety of nasties that lurk there. Staying too long in a darkened area will begin to affect Tasi’s sanity meter which is represented by the black tendrils at the edge of the screen.
In order to try and survive and prevent Tasi from losing her sanity, the player needs to find a source of light. The matches will only last a few seconds but should help her reclaim some level of sanity. However, it’s important to keep an eye out for lamps, candles, and torches as these will last much longer.
8 Don’t Move Too Quickly Holding Matches
Even though the matches don’t last very long they are an invaluable resource in the world of Amnesia for obvious reasons. They can light torches, candles, and other flammable items to keep Tasi’s sanity meter in check.
However, moving around too quickly with a lit match will cause the flame to expire almost instantly making her waste one of the valuable items in an instant. It’s better to move around in the crouched position as this will slow down Tasi’s movement.
7 Stay Crouched
Amnesia: Rebirth is a survival horror game but since Tali’s survival completely relies on the player’s ability to run and hide it’s also a stealth game. In most cases, enemies can be avoided if the player remains as quiet as possible rather than making a run for it.
The best way to be silent and stealthy in Rebirth is to make sure Tasi is crouching. Not only will this soften the sound of her footsteps but will make it far easier to get around enemies and not alert them to her presence.
6 If All Else Fails, Hide
There will be times in the game that running away or being stealthy just won’t cut it when exploring the dangerous caves, deserts, and other locations in Amnesia: Rebirth. Sometimes the best way to avoid enemies is to hide.
Of course, this would be useless advice if the player didn’t know where the hiding places are so taking one’s time to explore and having an idea of where to hide when things get a little too dicey is the key to getting away from monsters.
5 Rely On Your Wits
Ultimately, making sure Tasi survives will rely on everything from keeping her sanity meter in check, knowing when to hide, and knowing when to run. The best way to do this is to prepare to fail and take as much time as possible exploring the environments.
As even in the dark players can still get a good sense of their surroundings and knowing what actions they should take and having a good knowledge of the environments will pay dividends.
4 Rooms With Natural Light
There are various well-lit areas to be discovered in Amnesia: Rebirth. These safe areas that will also help the protagonist’s sanity meter to subside and return to normal. These areas are akin to the safe rooms with typewriters that can be found in the Resident Evil series and there’s even some relaxing music to accompany it.
Naturally, Tasi won’t need any matches, torches, or lanterns in these areas due to the natural lighting and they offer the player a brief moment of calm.
3 Light Isn’t The Only Way To Reclaim Tasi’s Sanity
When playing through Amnesia: Rebirth players need to rely on their wits and use every resource possible. To survive Tasi needs to run, hide, and seek the light to make sure that she survives the horrors that await her in the game.
However, there’s another way that Tasi can reclaim a measure of her sanity and this is done by having Tasi stop and think about her child. These moments not only provide the game some serious emotional weight at key points in the game but will also help pull Tasi back into reality.
2 Inspect Every Item
Exploration the and point and click style adventure mechanics from the previous games makes a return in Amnesia: Rebirth. As a result, it’s important to be mindful of the objects and items that are scattered all over the place throughout the game’s environments.
Picking up various objects and items throughout the game as rotating and inspecting them thoroughly could reveal vital clues for the puzzles in the game as well as add a significant amount of world-building information to absorb.
1 The Rifts And The Amulet
As Tasi explores the depths of Amnesia: Rebirth she will eventually come across walls and rocks that have a hue of color and floating stones around them. During this time it would be a good idea to get Tasi to check her Amulet to see if it is reacting to the rocks.
If the Amulet reacts with the strangely colored walls and rocks this will open up a rift and a passage into the Dark World. Players will then need to use the Amulet to guide them through the darkness until they reach the end of the realm.
