Among Us is a game with a simple premise that has exploded into an internet phenomenon. The game has spawned an interesting culture, lingo, and a wealth of great memes. It’s also a hilarious but frightening insight into how quickly players will turn on each other when doubt abounds.
These memes tap into how ‘sus’ the game makes everyone and the hilarity that ensues afterward. Whether it’s struggling to seem innocent, innocents trying to prove their innocence, or how awkward it feels being the Impostor, these memes make us all a little sus.
Updated July 28th, 2021 by Amelia Summers: Among Us has gone through many changes, with updates bringing gameplay tweaks, new stages, and even new skins. All of this has brought more players into the game and the growing community has more memes to offer.
14 Complete The Heart
Lots of people love Among Us. It’s an accessible game to pick up and play, even if you don’t play video games often, and it’s available on many systems. In this meme, we can see two people chatting and kindling their love, but possibly in different ways.
Where one partner sees a heart that needs to be completed, the other person sees a Crewmate. This meme is great because it shows the far reaching influence of Among Us, but perhaps it also suggests that couples can have a good time playing the game together.
13 It Was Red
A phrase that’s made its way throughout Among Us player circles is “Red is sus”, meaning that the red colored crewmate looks suspicious. This probably doesn’t have to do with red crewmates actually being impostors most of the time. It’s likely just because red is the default color and it’s such a common color, too.
However, this meme pokes fun at the idea of one crewmate telling the others who the impostor really is, and the other crewmate not believing them. The yellow crewmate can only come to terms with the fact when they suffer the same fate at the hands of red.
12 You Seem Sus
In Among Us, when it’s time to have an emergency meeting or discuss who the impostor might be, everyone tends to be tense. After all, they may get voted off the ship for anything they might have done or said, and the discussions during meetings are a game of their own in a way, where you have to avoid coming off as suspicious.
Often, you might find yourself getting voted off simply because you weren’t spotted by other crewmates. Sometimes, there’s even less of a reason than that. The others might decide that you “seem kinda sus” and declare your guilty verdict because it just felt right.
11 Among Us Nuggets
Nuggets come in a variety of different shapes, and the shape is usually random. Thanks to the simple and iconic designs of the crewmates in Among Us, it can be easy to find everyday objects that resemble crewmates.
For example, recently someone found a nugget in a McDonald’s BTS meal that was shaped like a crewmate. The nugget was put up for sale online and sold for a ridiculous amount of money. This meme is about a similarly shaped nugget. It’s fun to see a popular game in everyday items, bringing the game to everyday life.
10 Democracy At Its Finest
Ben Franklin once said that “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what they are going to have for lunch.” This meme points out how Among Us is a great example of this in action.
Many would argue that the meetings and voting are what makes or breaks an Impostor run as it allows them to throw off suspicious, cast doubt on others, and perhaps get a kill. This meme points out those moments when a player calls an emergency meeting to relay some important information to identify the culprit only to get thrown out the airlock. For an Impostor, this is an ideal situation and proof that democracy can work to their benefit.
9 Judgment
With everyone wanting to win and doubt and suspicion running rampant, being a Crewmate who’s considered suspicious is a hard gig. Players are at their most judgmental, pessimistic, and doubtful when playing this game, making proving your innocence nearly impossible.
Thankfully it’s reserved for a game, but one could only imagine the nightmare it would be to face a jury of Among Us players in court. This meme perfectly describes how being a sus Crewmate feels when voting rolls around.
8 1 In 3
As the game gets down to the wire and players are left with only two Crewmates and an Impostor, things can get intense. The Impostor is struggling to convince at least one Crewmate the other is guilty and the accused Crewmate is doing their best to prove their innocence.
This meme accurately depicts how paranoid and suspicious players get in the end game and the voting process can get intense. Players need a lot of luck proving their innocence if they took their time declaring their innocence in this scenario.
7 Proving Innocence
It is far easier to look suspicious than it is to look innocent, and proving it is even more of a challenge. It’s getting to the point that even doing what the player is supposed to do as a Crewmate can look suspicious. This makes arguing innocence really difficult.
This meme illustrates the frustration of trying to phrase what the player was doing in such a way that it sounds ok. It has gotten to where even just doing your tasks in Medbay sounds like something an Impostor would say.
6 Dramatic Impostor
Self-reporting a kill as an Impostor is a risky move that can backfire very easily. Because it’s a tactic that has been used to death it automatically makes whoever finds the body look suspicious. Yet if done correctly it can throw the Crewmates off the scent.
Of course, some Impostors fall into the trap of getting a little too dramatic about finding the body. With over the top surprise, dismay, or frustration coming out stronger than if they had been a Crewmate finding the corpse, as this meme illustrates.
5 Looks Fishy
With all the accusations and manipulation, it is easy to forget that at the core of this game is a story akin to The Thing. The Impostors are aliens who can mimic the appearance of humans to blend in and kill the Crewmates using sharp appendages, large jaws, and other grotesque weapons.
This meme cites this issue and also holds a tongue in cheek joke regarding Impostors who are just absolutely doing the worst at hiding their true nature. Seeing someone in the process of killing someone or venting away sort of defeats the whole purpose of shapeshifting to blend in.
4 Origin Story?
The shape of the humans – and they are confirmed to be humans – is really odd. Theories abound suggesting they’re deformed, mutated, genetically altered, or even possibly children to explain their bean-like statures. This meme provides a more horrifying possibility that they’re the lower half of Teletubbies.
This generates a lot of nightmare-fuel inducing questions. Are they a bunch of severed Teletubbies running around? Are the top half of Teletubbies a mutation and Among Us shows their true appearance? Are the Teletubbies themselves shapeshifting monsters? We don’t have the answers but that’s probably for the best.
3 Victory?
Being the last two Crewmates alive on the ship as the final Impostor is jettisoned into space is a glorious feeling. The players have just managed to secure victory from near defeat and trusted each other and the evidence enough to uncover the truth. But at what cost?
With 80% of the crew dead and the ship needing extensive maintenance and repairs to make the journey home, it seems like a bitter victory. This meme emphasizes that point and raises the question of how bad things are going to be after the fact.
2 Blending In
This meme points to how Impostors are just going to be sus no matter what they do. The very effort of trying to blend in and be one of the gang is just going to come across as awkward and make them stand out.
The best thing to do is to simply act natural and not like a Crewmate. Any player making a point of stating their innocence, mentioning how they did x task without being asked, or saying another player can vouch for them is very transparent.
1 To Accuse Or Not To Accuse
Getting a Crewmate voted out is very beneficial for an Impostor and makes the work of eliminating the others much easier. Especially if said Crewmate is suspicious of the Impostor’s true nature and can pose problems later on. But the very act of accusing them is a double-edged sword as the rest of the crew may simply decide to jettison both players to be safe.
Alternatively, it’s a major risk for a player to state they were in Electrical as that’s a go-to defense for Impostors, even if it’s true. This meme accurately displays how stressful it can be as an Impostor trying to eliminate Crewmates while maintaining innocence.
