The Reaper Game could be coming to the small screen, as an anime adaptation of The World Ends with You is being teased.
The World Ends with You was originally an action RPG for the Nintendo DS. It was set in modern-day Shibuya, where several people who have died earn a second chance at life by competing in an event called the Reaper Game, where they must master supernatural abilities and finish different tasks that are appointed over seven days.
The DS version of The World Ends with You used both screens at once during battle, as the player controlled one character on the top screen using the buttons and the other character on the bottom screen using the stylus. New versions of The World Ends with You were later released for mobile phones and Nintendo Switch, which removed the dual-screen elements of the original game but added new post-game scenarios.
There have been rumors of a sequel to The World Ends with You for years, but it seems the series will be moving in a new direction. According to Famitsu, a teaser site has been opened for what appears to be an anime series based on The World Ends with You.
It’s believed that The World Ends with You anime was meant to be revealed during Anime Expo 2020, but that event was delayed and turned into an online event due to the coronavirus. The digital stream for Anime Expo 2020 will air on July 3, which is when the countdown on the teaser site will end.
Fans have waited for new content related to The World Ends with You for years, and they have only received new ports that have teased sequels, as well the character cameos in the Kingdom Hearts series. An anime based on The World Ends with You isn’t exactly the sequel that fans have wanted, but it could be a step toward reviving the series and bringing back the Reaper Game for one more round of chaos. We’ll know more when the Anime Expo stream starts on July 3.
