Animal Crossing: New Horizons wasn’t the first game in the Animal Crossing series to have a customization feature, but it expanded massively upon New Leaf’s capabilities. Customization became faster, easier, and way more versatile, with most craftable items having customizable features.

The joy of customizing items boils down to possibilities, one of the main reasons New Horizons has been so successful since its release. The possibilities have never been so vast in terms of house and island creation, but some things can get lost in this vastness. There are so many customizable items that some fall by the wayside and deserve recognition, especially when their options are arguably superior to the original.

10 Hula Doll

The Hula doll is a regular Gulliver reward that he will mail to the player upon retrieving his five communicator parts from the sand. The doll has six different customization options: Green, Red, Pink, Yellow, Blue, and Beige. Each one is representative of her outfit color, though her skin tone is also different with each option. Those who practice the Polynesian dance form will be able to customize their doll to more closely resemble themselves.

9 Fish Print

The Fish Print is a Fishing Tourney prize that can be given by CJ in exchange for 10 points. Not only are all the prints beautifully realistic, but there are a whopping 7 in total, including a Red snapper, Squid, and Blue Marlin. Plus, customizing it only takes one customization kit, in comparison to some items which can take 7 or more kits for one customization.

8 Pocket Campers

Those who play Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp can unlock these exclusive items by linking their Nintendo account. Both the Pocket vintage camper and Pocket modern camper can be customized into different designs and colors such as Lumberjack or Southwestern flair. Like a real vehicle, players can make it their style to reflect their own personality. They definitely make excellent decorations for those wanting an urban/city feel to their island.

7 Villager’s Photos

The main goal of many players in befriending a villager (besides genuinely loving them) is to receive the prized villager photo, signifying a maximized friendship level. Interestingly enough, the photo frame around the picture is customizable, offering eight different options.

For those who treasure their villager, the gold frame may work best, while others may prefer the colorfulness of the striped pastel frame or the subtleness of the dark wood frame. This customization option is wonderful for those wishing to match their photos to their existing decor.

6 Hanging Scroll

One of the more expensive items in the game, the Hanging scroll is a wall item that can be bought from Nook’s Cranny for a hefty 140,000 bells. If players want all five color variations, it will cost them a total of 700,000 bells. The customizable aspect of this item is the pattern of the scroll, which can be changed from its original Calligraphy to four other options, including Mountains, Bird, Fish, and Flower.

5 Drum Set

Musicians in real life often customize their drum sets in order to express a certain aesthetic, whether it be personal or representative of their group. New Horizons’ Drum set comes in 8 different color variations, but the customizable aspect is the bass drum, which is the largest of the set. Players can add a mock brand logo to the drum, a Rock logo, or even any custom design they choose. With 6 customization options and custom design capability, players are sure to drum up some creative ideas.

4 Loft Bed With Desk

Many players may have first encountered the Loft bed with desk in the houses of Peppy villagers, specifically Peppy villagers who moved in at the beginning of their island’s life. The desk comes in 8 different color variations, but the customizable aspect is both the contents of the shelves and the bedsheet. This item is great for conserving space and evoking a studious or academic atmosphere.

3 Mom’s Gifts

The player’s Mom is a complex and mysterious woman whose kindness manifests itself in the form of wonderful gifts sent in the mail, ranging from clothing to cake. Many of these items can be customized, such as Mom’s embroidery, which has 6 different patterns that range from flowers to a bird.

Other customizable Mom items include Mom’s pen stand, Mom’s candle set, and Mom’s tea cozy, to name a few. A mom can be many things, and this is reflected quite well in her many gifts and creations.

2 Corkboard

Corkboards can be great organizational tools, especially for those who benefit from visual learning. They can also be wonderful ways to sort and display mementos and treasures, and New Horizons’ Corkboard allows players to display any design they want, including the amazing designs made by other players. The default apple design can be changed into a flower or fish, though the infinite possibilities that custom designs provide is undeniably appealing.

1 Mug

There’s something uniquely satisfying about a warm mug of coffee, which explains the rise of cafés as social hangouts and as places that sell comfort as well as coffee. For those who want to create a café or diner on their island, the Mug offers not only 8 color variations but 6 customization options to choose from. Whether it be a classic logo or a cute fish pattern, the Mug quite aptly reflects the almost comical popularity of decorative mugs in society.
