With a roster of close to 500 villagers, you would think that Animal Crossing players would have no issues populating their various villages or islands. But the problem is everyone appears to want very specific villagers, and one of the most popular ones out there is Marshal, a smug squirrel that fans of the game can’t seem to stop going crazy over.
Following the release of the latest game in the series, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, his popularity had reached an all-time high. Desperate players have even been known to part with as much as 800,000 bells (the in-game currency) in order to secure this rather elusive villager on websites like Nookazon. But to understand just why he has proven to be that popular, it helps to know some keys facts about him.
10 His Uniqueness
While there are several squirrels in Animal Crossing and several species in the game with the smug personality, Marshal is the only smug squirrel.
This alone makes him one of a kind and easy to spot in any village or island. But add to that his cute appearance and it is clear why many players consider him a desirable addition to their island.
9 His Friendliness
Marshal might not appear to be the friendliest of villagers at first, but his personality actually helps him to get along with most of the other types of villagers.
This is in stark contrast to his angry demeanor since he is quite friendly and never hesitates to make kind remarks. He does tend to get a bit self-absorbed sometimes, but that only adds to his overall charm and appeal.
8 His Birthday
Marshal was born on the 29th of September, which makes him a Libra.
Libras are generally known for being peaceful, gentle, and social, all of which hold true for Marshal. They also tend to avoid confrontations and loudmouths, and considering how Marshal doesn’t always see eye to eye with cranky villagers, this tracks as well.
7 His Aspirations
Like many of the other villagers in Animal Crossing, Marshal harbors some grand aspirations and dreams. Specifically, he seeks to become a world-famous designer.
This is somewhat reflected in his sense of style. His initial clothes are a puffy jacket (New Horizons) or denim vest (New Leaf), and he can also be spotted at the Able Sister’s shop from time to time, no doubt looking for new threads.
6 His Appearances
Marshal made his first appearance in the Nintendo 3DS game, Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Since then, he has had appearances in both Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp for mobile phones and Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Nintendo Switch.
Judging by his current popularity, it’s safe to assume that he would also be appearing in future Animal Crossing games as well.
5 His Cameos
Marshal also makes a cameo appearance (along with several other Animal Crossing characters) in the Wii U racing game, Mario Kart 8, on the Animal Crossing course that was part of the Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8 DLC pack.
This was later ported to the Nintendo Switch as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the highest-selling game on the hybrid console thus far. But I’m sure you can guess what is right there behind it at number 2.
4 His Catchphrase(s)
Marshal’s catchphrase is “sulky,” which is possibly a reference to his sulky demeanor. The phrase actually translates to “doesn’t matter” or “not care how” in the game’s original language of Japanese.
What is even more intriguing are the translations in other languages. For example, his catchphrase is “tecuén” in Spanish, which is believed to be a reference to the Aztec term for “beast.”
3 His House
Marshal’s house is modeled after a coffee shop or cafe, which highlights just how much he loves his coffee. The furniture items that can be seen in it include a coffee grinder, coffee cups, and an espresso maker.
Speaking of his love of coffee, Marshal enjoys taking his with a tiny bit of milk and one spoonful of sugar.
2 His Favorite Song
Marshall is a huge fan of K.K. Slider and his favorite song from the singer’s extensive catalog is K.K. Bossa. This can be heard playing whenever players visit his house.
The laidback tune definitely fits his chill, easygoing nature, and coupled with the cafe aesthetic of his house makes the place a good place to hang out. Just don’t let that fool you into thinking he isn’t also full of energy.
1 His Love of Dancing
Of all the things that Marshal can be spotted doing within Animal Crossing, dancing appears to be the one he is most passionate about. It is in fact one of the only times he can be seen wearing a rare smile, although he blushes and quickly brushes this off if it is pointed out by one of the other villagers.
He has also been heard stating that he would love to appear on Dancing with the Stars someday, and with those killer moves and personality, there’s no doubt that he’d go very far.
