There are a few different personality types in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and some of them would imply that a particular villager would be a bit of a grump. There are cranky villagers, snooty ones, and more. On top of that, some villagers that have more pleasant personalities look grumpy as well, just based on their appearance.
However, get to know many of those grumps and they’ll turn out to be pretty big sweethearts. It just takes a little warmth to melt even the iciest of hearts, after all. Here are some villagers who look like they’d be grumpy, but are actually big softies.
10 Ken
Ken is a chicken villager tagged with the smug personality type. This means he’s a bit stuck up from time to time and a bit full of himself. While mostly pleasant, smug villagers can be a bit conceited and egotistical. Ken looks like he’d be a bit of a mean spirit, as well. His determined eyes and angular brow make him look like an angry bird.
However, Ken is a big chicken both literally and figuratively. He’s a sweetheart, and being friendly with him will turn his expression around entirely.
9 Canberra
It could be the mean-looking eyes and downturned eyebrows, or it could be the pursed frown, but Canberra looks like a real mean bully. However, she actually has the sisterly personality type, meaning she’s very loving, caring, and friendly toward you.
She likes to talk about fighting to defend those she likes, and her obsession with sports and activities. Her face looks like it’ll be quick to talk about you behind your back to the popular girls at school, but when she’s happy, it lights up and you see she’s truly a lovable koala.
8 Genji
A jock personality type villager, Genji is a rabbit that has been in the series for a while and is a slight fan favorite.
Because of his vibe and design, he seems like he might be a bit of a rigid personality with a stuck-up attitude and love of tradition. But, Genji is a loveable weirdo like most of the other jock villagers. His default artwork shows him frowning seemingly in disapproval of something, but don’t worry — he’s a cutie pie.
7 Limberg
As one of the most hated villagers of all time, Limberg is a controversial choice for this list. This cheese-inspired mouse villager looks like someone’s divorced deadbeat dad who doesn’t want to get a job and just sits on the couch drinking cheap beer all day.
It’s believed that Limberg smells bad and takes pride in it, but this is not confirmed. What is confirmed, though, is that Limberg can be as sweet as any other villager, even despite his cranky personality type.
6 Pango
Pango is an anteater villager with the peppy personality type. This means she’s actually very upbeat and positive, frequently using fun slang and being playful with the player, Pango, like other peppy villagers, is excitable and optimistic, and very friendly.
However, one would not assume any of this based on her appearance. Pango looks like she’s giving perpetual side-eye, and that she thinks she’s a lot better than you. However, don’t judge a book by its cover!
5 Buck
Speaking of villagers that look like they’re always giving side-eye — Buck seems like he’s always angry with you but won’t say it to your face. His downturned eyebrows and small eyes make him look like he’s very mad about something and about to storm off in a huff.
He looks like a complete grump. However, he’s a jock villager that’s actually very nice to the player. He has a bit of a competitive side, of course, but it’s not mean-spirited.
4 Harry
Harry is a hippo villager with the cranky personality type and a very prominent rough-looking mustache across the entirety of his face.
Despite his rough, unshaven appearance and mean-looking eyes, Harry is actually quite a cool guy. He looks absolutely delighted when he laughs and he’s more than willing to be friendly with you and the other villagers.
3 Hazel
Looking like a weird hybrid between a unibrow, a bookish nerd, and a chipmunk is Hazel, a squirrel villager with the sisterly personality type. Her unibrow is definitely an eye-catcher, but other elements of her appearance suggest she may be standoffish and quiet as well.
However, this is far from the truth. As a sisterly villager, Hazel is a pure sweetheart. And of course, how can you not love the “uni-wow” catchphrase?
2 Soleil
Soleil is a hamster villager with the snooty personality type and the appearance to match. Many have joked that she has the “Karen” haircut that is the subject of many memes and internet jokes, suggesting she’d like to speak to the manager and raise a fuss over a minor inconvenience.
However, this appearance doesn’t match Soleil’s character at all. She’s one of the sweetest and most loving villagers you can have on an island. She frequently compliments you, takes a vested interest in the lives of those around her, and is almost always smiling or beaming with affection and positivity.
1 Lucky
If you had sustained such immense injury that you had to be wrapped in bandages from head to toe, you’d probably be grumpy. The same could be true for Lucky, a dog villager that not only has those bandages, but also a glowing, menacing single eye, none of which points toward his actual personality type: lazy.
Despite his appearance, Lucky is actually pretty positive and upbeat. His apparent full-body injury hasn’t seemed to dampen his spirits too much, as he’s still very happy and optimistic. Perhaps he had one of those “I almost died so now I’m going to live life to the fullest and radiate joy” moments.
