Animal Crossing is a game series filled to the absolute brim with content. So much so, that learning all there is to know about your favorite villagers will take multiple playthroughs of every Animal Crossing game, exhausting as much of their dialogue as possible, or just following them around to watch their every move like a total creep.
Punchy is one of the oldest villagers in the franchise and is a fan-favorite among lovers of cats and blue furniture alike. While Punchy may be as laid back as can be, he’s got quite a few secrets to uncover.
This list was updated to include four extra facts about the villager, Punchy, as some additional information was discovered after the release of New Horizons, and some extra general info was included as well.
14 Aries & Blueberries
Now, with the release of New Horizons, there are an absolute ton of animal villagers each with their own unique birthday. There are so many, in fact, that almost every day of the year has a villager to throw a birthday party with. Punchy’s birthday is April 11th, making him the laziest Aries around.
When looking at the calendar, Punchy only shares an April birthday with one other cat villager, Katt. But, the date range for an Aries is March 21st to April 20th, making Punchy the only cat villager in the entire series to be an Aries. We can only wonder how many times Punchy brags about this at family reunions.
13 Gifts On The Horizons
Like most other villagers in the series, their gift preferences change a bit from game to game, not too dissimilar to someone’s clothing styles or aesthetic shifting over time. In Wild World, Punchy favors nothing but the funkiest of clothing, he loves trendy and dignified furniture in City Folk, and basic, blue items in New Leaf.
His current preferences in New Horizons are most similar to the ones in New Leaf, as any kind of simple items such as basic tee shirts will be right up his alley.
12 The Youngest Of Six
Speaking of family reunions, Punchy is stated to be the youngest out of his five other siblings in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. While he may have a lazy personality, one of his skills is to stay awake, possibly due to his years of living with five siblings.
It is never stated how well he gets along with them, but we do know the types of personalities that Punchy can jive with, and which ones he prefers to stray away from. As a lazy bone, he gets along well with normal, peppy, smug, and uchi personalities. Snooty and jock villagers can give him a hard time understanding his lifestyle, but Punchy seems to be an accepting and happy soul regardless.
11 A Cat And His Coffee
While The Roost has yet to appear in New Horizons, all villagers from previous games have a specific coffee preference. Punchy’s favorite coffee is Kilimanjaro, which is the second most popular choice behind Mocha.
Unlike a lot of other villagers, however, Punchy is a bit more hardcore when it comes to enjoying his nice cup of joe, as he prefers no sugar or milk whatsoever.
10 A Fierce Name For A Fair Feline
By name alone, anyone without prior knowledge of him would assume that Punchy is a jock villager with a huge interest in martial arts. Although, the true meaning behind his name is almost the exact opposite.
“Punchy” is a word used to describe feeling dizzy or tired from being punched, like when your favorite anime character gets bonked on the head by an oversized mallet. In Japanese, “ビンタ (Binta)” his name shares a similar meaning of “being slapped in the face”. His namesake could also play into his appearance, as his purple eyelids are reminiscent of someone with a really gnarly black eye.
9 Translation Confusion
There are a lot of villagers in Animal Crossing. Hence why there are a few cases of villager name translations that tend to overlap into different languages. Punchy is an example of this, as his name is used in some way for two other villagers.
First off, Punchy’s Italian name, Felix, is the same as Filbert’s German name. Also, Punchy’s German name, Julian, is the same as the English name of the horse villager, Julian.
8 Not Quite An Original
Western fans may place Punchy as an OG villager, but he actually didn’t make his debut until the second version of Doubutsu no Mori in Japan. Doubutsu no Mori or, “Animal Forest” originally release on the N64 as a Japanese exclusive, and was later ported to the GameCube for other regions in 2001.
Japan’s GameCube version of Animal Forest is called Doubutsu no Mori e+ for the e-reader add-on for the GameCube. Punchy is one of two added villagers in this game, along with the cub villager, Cheri.
7 Lucky Posterboy
Even though Punchy was absent from the original Japanese release of Animal Crossing, he seemed to be enough of a cool cat to appear on the box art of the western release of the GameCube classic.
There aren’t a ton of villagers in the series featured on the box art of Animal Crossing titles, making Punchy pretty lucky. Along with Mitzi, Kiki, and Rosie, they are the only cat villagers in the franchise to appear on the box art of any of the mainline and spinoff titles.
6 Clothing Preferences
From Wild World onwards, villagers all have favorite and least-favorite clothing types. Punchy is quite the cool cat, so he has a preference for funky clothing, and dislikes flashy, gaudy attire. Gifting Punchy funky clothing items that include a One-Ball Shirt, Big Star Shirt, Dapper Shirt, or Toad Shirt will make this cute cat’s day.
Punchy seems to prefer a more minimalistic approach in New Leaf, as he now adores basic clothing and dislikes iconic clothing. It isn’t too hard to guess this, but out of all the colored gifts that you could give him, he has a soft spot for blue.
5 Punchy’s Missed Audition
This may be surprising to many, but Animal Crossing, or rather Doubutsu no Mori has an animated film that released in 2006. This is a feature-length, animated special follows a new villager getting accustomed to her new life with her anthropomorphic animal friends.
However, just as he didn’t make his appearance in the original title, there’s a huge lack of Punchy seen within this film. Instead, Rosie took the place of Punchy as the cat with loads of screentime, but it’s safe to assume that he would much rather stay home anyway.
4 Initial Shirts
Punchy is quite a fashionable individual, with a bit of a style change since 2001. In his debut game, he signed a contract for a self-promotion advertisement by wearing a GameCube tee-shirt reading “I <3 GC”. His shirt for the western release is a simple, yet adorable cherry shirt.
He has since gained an appreciation for a more minimalistic appearance, as from Wild World onwards he can be seen rocking his iconic Gray Tartan Shirt. Punchy actually takes pride in his stylish endeavors, as he may mention the name “Fashion-Lad” from time to time, which he uses to describe the villagers that compliment his eye for fashion.
3 Punchy’s Feng Shui
It’s surprising to see that there isn’t a “Punchy Perfection” section in the latest home-design magazine, as Punchy has had a super iconic and recognizable home ever since Animal Crossing on the GameCube.
We’re no well aware that Punchy’s three favorite colors are blue, blue, and blue, as is seen with his flooring. He likes to add a little contrast in with his orange patterned wall, but not without his various blue furnishings and his favorite “K.K Love Song” playing in the background.
2 Amiibo Card
Amiibo Festival may not have been the next mainline game we were all hoping for back in the days of Nintendo’s drought in the Wii U era, but at least it gave us a little more info on our favorite villagers. But, not much else.
Punchy’s Amiibo Card lists his name in a few different languages, his roll value of 6, the rock hand-sign, and his star sign on the #50 Amiibo Card. His request is listed as “a room for entertaining cats” which is a little concerningly left up to interpretation.
1 Ice Breaker Facts
If you ever happen to bump into Punchy, He’s probably either sitting by himself or with another group of lazy personalities and wouldn’t mind sharing a few of his interests with you.
He’d likely talk about stuff such as his goal of becoming a cartoonist, having a fear of Frankenstein and monster masks, likes to say “mrmpht”, or that his Spanish name simply translates to “cat”.
