If you’re a fishing enthusiast in the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons then you’ve probably made fast friends with C.J. The traveling, livestreaming beaver often pays top dollar for whatever sea life you manage to drag out of the water making him a good way to make some major bells while casting out your line. But beyond that, he also holds fishing tourneys from time to time and one of those occasions is coming up very soon.

For all the fishing fans out there, here’s everything you should know about C.J.’s Fishing Tourneys.

How To Get In On The Fishing Fun

C.J.’s Fishing Tourneys are seasonal events that occur every four months. That means there will be a new Tourney held every January, April, July, and October. They happen on the second Saturday of that particular month, so that means this year’s Summer Tourney - or Winter Tourney if you live in the Southern Hemisphere - is scheduled for July 11.

To participate in the Tourney, all you need to do is head over to Residential Services on the day and find C.J. who should be hanging out in front of the building. Simply talk to him and the opportunity to enter the Tourney should present itself. The first time you compete is free, but if you want to keep accruing points it’s going to cost you 500 Bells for each additional entry. Oh, and make sure your Residential Services building has been upgraded or you won’t be allowed to play.

Tourney Rules And Prizes

The rules for C.J.’s Fishing Tourney are pretty straightforward. Once you’ve talked to him about the Tourney all you need to do is catch a big old batch of fish within the span of 3 minutes. Once that time limit is up, report back to C.J. and he’ll reward you with points for each fish you caught. You’ll get one point per fish but if you manage to catch more than 3 fish before the 3 minutes are up you’ll earn an additional 2 points.

It’s also possible to make C.J.’s Fishing Tourney into a multiplayer experience by inviting some friends to your island or traveling to someone else’s home. If a whole group enters the Tourney together, they’ll get additional points for catching over 5 fish as a team. Best of all, C.J. won’t charge you the 500 Bell fee to re-enter the Tourney. So it may be more lucrative to go fishing with some friends.

Now you may be asking what’s the point of all these points? Well, like most of the events in New Horizons you can exchange them for items, which for the Tourney means fabulous fishing prizes from C.J. This includes an assortment of fishing-related clothing, furniture, tools, and home decor. Here’s what you can win:

Additionally, C.J. will give you exclusive fishing swag for every 10 points you get. If you score 100, 200, or 300 points, C.J. will be so proud of your fishing prowess that he’ll send a bronze, silver, or gold fishing trophy to your mailbox. What an honor!

The Tourney will available until 6 PM so you’re got the whole day to capture as many fish as possible. And of course, you’ll still be able to sell any extra aquatic creatures to C.J. for 1.5x its normal price. So if you’ve been hanging onto a whole gaggle of Oarfish, haul them over to C.J. rather than those cheapskates Timmy and Tommy.

July 11 will be the only time you’ll be able to get in on C.J.’s Fishing Tourney for this Summer/Winter. After that, it won’t be back until the next one which should happen on October 10 of this year. So craft some extra sturdy fishing rods, bring a whole bunch of bait, and get out there and fish!
