Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ version 1.4 brought with it a bunch of changes to the game’s friendship gifting mechanics, so if you’re looking for a quick, simple guide on the updated daily gifting system you’ve come to the right place!

In New Horizons, you are able to give daily gifts to your pals once you reach friendship Level 2 with them. Doing so is a sure-fire way to earn friendship points as well as photos of villagers which you can hang up and whose frames you can customize as you desire.

Earning Base Points

  • +3 points for furniture items. +2 points for picked flowers, bugs, sea creatures, fish, nets, fishing rods, watering cans, umbrellas (for non-frog villagers), the villager’s preferred clothing (each have 2 colors and styles which they prefer), or their favorite music. +1 point for non-preferred clothing, umbrellas for frog villagers, and any other items not mentioned above. You’ll get -2 points if you gift them Garbage (old tires, used fireworks, empty cans, and so on).

Earning Bonus Points

  • If your gift has a sell value of between 250-749 bells, you will get 1 bonus point and a gift in return which will definitely be either furniture or clothing. You won’t get any bonuses if your gift item’s sell value is less than 250 bells. If your gift has a sell value of 750 bells or more, you are guaranteed bonus points and a gift in return, but specifics will vary according to what friendship level you’re on with the villager. Specifics are as follows:

  • Level 1-2 gets you 1 bonus point and a gift in return which will definitely be either furniture or clothing. Level 3-4 gets you 2 bonus points and a gift in return which has a 90% chance of being either furniture or clothing and a 10% chance of being either wallpaper or flooring.  Level 5-6 gets you 3 bonus points and a gift in return which has an 85% chance of being either furniture or clothing and a 15% chance of being either wallpaper or flooring. Note: if their return gift to you is an item of furniture, there is then a 6-10.2% chance that it’ll be a photo of themselves.
