May is coming, and that means new bugs are set to arrive in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Here in the North, bugs are a seasonal thing. In the winter when it’s cold the bugs mostly disappear, barring a few household spiders. Then in the summer, great clouds of mayflies and mosquitoes clog up radiator grilles from here to the 49th parallel.

Things might not be quite as bad this year thanks to the coronavirus keeping mosquito food inside, but a mere pandemic isn’t enough to stop the seasonal rotation of bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. May brings new bugs to both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and we’ve got the lowdown on which bugs are going where.

Northern Hemisphere

Up in the great white North, Tarantulas are out and Scorpions are in. Just like those pesky enormous spiders, Scorpions will chase players around and sting them if they’re approached too aggressively, so watch out. You can find Scorpions on the ground at night from the hours of 7 PM to 4 AM.

Violin Beetles and Rosalia Batesi Beetles will now start appearing on tree stumps all day long, with the Rosalia Batesi Beetle selling for a cool 3,000 bells. In ponds and rivers, Pondskaters and Diving Beetles will now appear between 8 AM and 7 PM.

Things are also different in the skies of New Horizons. The Great Purple Emperor Butterfly has emerged from its cocoon and can be spotted from 4 AM to 7 PM, while the Banded Dragonfly can be spotted from 8 AM to 5 PM. The Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing Butterfly–which sells for 4,000 bells–can be rarely found flying around the island between 8 AM and 4 PM.

Southern Hemisphere

The South is still enjoying a large number of native bug species roaming around the island, but there are at least a few newcomers in May.

First is the Mole Cricket, a noisy underground-dwelling bug that you have to listen for and then dig up. They can be sold for 500 bells and can be found all day (and night) long.

The Damselfly is another flying bug that can be found anywhere on the island at all times, and the Tarantula replaces the Scorpion as the ground-based biting insect that terrorizes villagers from 7 PM to 4 AM.
