Here’s where and how to grab a gar in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Our last fish, the giant snakehead, took us to Southeast Asia. The gar will have us all remain in North America, where the gar is endemic to Southern Canada, Eastern United States, Mexico, and Central America.

Gars are actually a family of over a dozen individual species over two genera. They’ve all got long bodies with cute little snouts, but vary widely in size. The largest species, known as the alligator gar, can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh up to 300 pounds! They’re often mistaken for alligators due to their snouts and large size–hence the name. The species of gar featured in New Horizons seems to be the spotted gar, which is found all over the United States in rivers and lakes. Due to high levels of pollution, spotted gars have high levels of mercury and are considered a health risk if consumed.

Like the giant snakehead, gars have swim bladders that can also function as a primitive lung, allowing them to survive in stagnant water. Some gars have even been known to travel through sewers in order to reach other rivers and ponds.

Consider the gar to be the nocturnal cousin of the giant snakehead. While the snakehead prowls ponds during the day, gar can only be found at night.

Where To Find A Gar

You can find gar in ponds between the hours of 4 PM to 9 AM. They spawn from large shadows, making them somewhat uncommon. Weather doesn’t affect their spawn rates, but they can only be caught in certain months. In the Northern Hemisphere, gar spawn between June and September. In the Southern Hemisphere, gar spawn between December and March.

You can sell gar for 6,000 bells, or you can donate them to Blathers for his museum.
