If you’re a first-timer to Animal Crossing with New Horizons, you were probably surprised to see a thin shadow lurking in the oceans. Fish come in all shapes and sizes, but there are a few unique fish that are slimmer than the others. I’m, of course, talking about the Ribbon Eel. The funnily named fish is brightly colored and resembles a ribbon -hence the name.

If you’re looking to nab one, the season has finally come for such a feat. With the summer months rolling in, eels will begin to populate the ocean depths and you’ll be able to donate them for your museum. You can even make funny jokes about their name and then shower them in love. Everyone wants an eel for a pet, right?

Anyway, you’re likely here because you’re having a hard time actually nabbing a Ribbon Eel. The first time you saw the shadow, you probably scared it away. Don’t worry! We’ve all been there. Just make sure to follow these steps and you’ll be swimming in eels.

The Ribbon Eel, as with most summer fish, spawns between the months of June and October. Available all day, you may randomly get lucky by browsing the beaches from dusk till dawn. They aren’t exactly common but don’t fall into the “rare” category either. There are no special requirements to make one spawn, though playing on a rainy day will see them appear more frequently.

You can speed things up with bait and even whittle it down further by taking a trip to a deserted island. With usually a single river (and sometimes none at all), there will be a greater chance of ocean fish appearing. Going fishing in the morning seems to help as the bigger sharks won’t be out.

Once you’ve caught and donated a Ribbon Eel, you’re basically done with it. They don’t sell for a lot, going for 600 bells at Nook’s Cranny. If you find a lot on an island, they might be worth making the trip back to your store. Otherwise, nab yourself one to give a new home to your museum.
