As you begin your journey for sharks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you will face plenty of upsets in grabbing the wrong fish at the wrong time. We’ve all wanted a Great White Shark and found a Hammerhead, for instance, but the Switch installment of this happy series goes a step further. Now there’s a fake-out finned shadow that isn’t even a shark!

Exclusive to the 2020 sequel is the Suckerfish. Based on the real-life Remora, these sneaky chaps feature practically the same shadow as every other shark in Animal Crossing. There is a slight size difference, but it is barely perceptible and you’re bound to pull up more than a few Suckerfish before finding the exact shark you want. Have mercy on us, RNGesus.

The Sea Bass has some extreme competition for most annoying fish in New Horizons. If you’re reading all of this, then you’re likely looking for ways to help nab a Suckerfish. You might already have one after reading my boring rant, but here’s what you can do to tip the odds in your favor.

The Suckerfish may share a shadow with its fellow sharks, but it actually spawns all day long instead of only in the afternoon. Knowing this, if you play New Horizons after 9:00 am and before 4:00 pm, you’ll have a much better chance of nabbing one.

As with any other rare fish, bringing lots of fish bait and combing the beaches will see you encounter a finned shadow before long. You likely won’t need to take a trip to a deserted island, but that is also an option. Fishing while raining will increase the Suckerfish’s spawn rate, too.

What makes the Suckerfish so aggravating is that it isn’t really worth a whole lot to sell. Pawning one off to the Nookling’s will net you 1,500 bells and selling to CJ brings that total up to a whopping 2,200 bells. It mainly exists as a distraction from the bigger sharks that are more worth your time.

Still, once you have donated one, you can safely stop looking for it…and then continuously encounter them because they are annoying.
