If you’ve nonchalantly wandered around your island on a cool cozy night, chances are you spotted a villager or two serenading a melody in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. But did you know there are a few tricks to get your neighbors to chirp? While the sequence for such is mostly random, here is a little cheatsheet of methods to use when trying to musicalize your town.

Only Some Neighbors Enjoy It

Keep in mind that not every villager wants to sing. You can play every KK Slider best hit but if they don’t want to they won’t. It’s best to see first if there’s anyone on the island who is confirmed to sing. This includes wolf Skye, wolf Freya, Katt the cat, bird Jacques, Shari the monkey, and Lily the frog. Why some do and some don’t is a mystery, but a theory may be that it has to do with the species of the villager. Since birds sing to attract other birds, this is why Jacques naturally does so. Think about it, wolves and their canine ancestors love to howl at night. This is why it makes sense to see Skye and Freya humming into the late hours.

On that note, it may also depend on the personality of the animal. You will find some to be more shy about it than others even when they’re the same species. For example, Freya has a more reserved personality versus Skye’s friendlier disposition. Skye is happy to wander around singing on her own but players have reported Freya will only do it in a group with others. It is possible however that you can unlock it as you become more friendly with her. This goes for other shy townsfolk as well.

Put On A Little Music

Using a radio, record player or any kind of musical device will get them to sing under the right circumstances. The only exception here is the wood block stereo. It will make them dance but not sing so you’ll want to avoid trying with that. Unless of course you’re attempting to turn the majority of the island into Radio City Rockettes, in which by all means go right ahead.

To begin, find a villager to try it on and set the music player of choice near them enough to get their attention. Speak to them so that they will notice the device. While shoving villagers is normally frowned upon, it’s perfectly fine to give them a little nudge for this. Wait just a bit, and you’ll surely have a songbird or two on your hands in no time.

Encouraging your villagers to sing can be tricky, but with the right approach it can be easily unlocked. Have fun and enjoy the soothing ballads of your villagers as you go about the island.
