With August less than a week away, Nintendo is finally ready to talk about what the next update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will bring. The biggest addition here is the launch of the Save Data Backup Feature, something that I recently inquired about. For something more related to actual gameplay, one feature from New Leaf is making a return alongside a nice summer celebration update.

In a trailer posted to the official Animal Crossing Twitter account, the first feature shown off was the weekly fireworks shows. Every Sunday in August, your island will host a small celebration where your villagers get together in the town center. Redd will hold raffles for you to win prizes and you can sit down to take in the sights of some explosives. You’ll be able to design your own custom fireworks, as well.

Next up is the Dream Island Tours. These will work slightly differently from New Leaf in that you can initiate them from your own personal bed. A new character, Luna, will then ask if you’d like to explore a different island and you’ll be whisked away. The only downside is you’ll need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, but that’s still a pretty neat addition.

Lastly, this update will introduce the save data backup feature that players have been clamoring for. Not a lot of details were present about this, but Nintendo is directing everyone to its support page for any help. There’s not currently an article about cloud saving with New Horizons, but it’ll probably work by downloading an application and copying over your save.

The next update for New Horizons is planned for sometime in the fall. The small character icon shown off in the trailer shows a pumpkin-headed figure, which could signal the return of Tortimer. That probably means the update will launch in early October to be ready for Halloween.

It’s a little strange that all of this “DLC” has been features present in past Animal Crossing titles, but Nintendo loves to take that drip-feed approach with its newer games. This is exactly like how Splatoon and its sequel were given extra content. If you keep players coming back over time, then discussion will flare up and newcomers will be more enticed to try it out. That’s just marketing 101.
