Nintendo has officially removed the hack that allowed players to grow gorgeous star fragment trees on their island from Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Per an update for the game released earlier this week (referred to as “Version 1.4.1”), the infamous hack that allowed Animal Crossing: New Horizons players to fill their island with trees that produced star fragments has been completely removed. According to the update’s official description from Nintendo, the update has “Fixed an issue where trees could mature and contain things other than the normal fruit, etc.” While the description didn’t specify the star fragment trees directly, it’s clear that a hack to produce them is no longer an option in the game.
Any pre-existing star fragment trees have since been returned to regular money trees, which is the kind of trees the hack initially modified. While the free bells were a nice gesture, some players were upset by the recent update.
The news comes just a week after the second wave of New Horizons’ big summer update was implemented that added the highly anticipated Dream Suite feature to the game. While players were initially excited to visit islands using the new feature, Nintendo also implemented a way for players to report dream islands that had broken the game’s code of conduct. Unfortunately, many players who had engaged in hacking, predominantly to modify their island’s aesthetics and decorations (e.g. adding star fragment trees), began announcing on social media that Nintendo had deleted their dream islands.
According to Animal Crossing World, the reporting got so out of hand that some players were visiting islands just to hunt down any signs of hacking or cheating. Panicked players began deleting any modified features on their island, or simply stopped advertising it, to avoid being a target of these aggressive players.
It appears that this latest update is Nintendo’s direct solution to the problem.
Notably, the star fragment trees have publicly been in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons online spotlight since May. After over three months of silence from Nintendo, this is the first time they’ve acted in regards to the hacking.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
