From the weirdly-fake looking hair to the unnerving hollow eyes, there is a set list of villagers that most players typically hate. In addition to odd looks, certain villagers can be quite the pest when you’re just trying to make your island a safe space to call home.

Aesthetics are important for Animal Crossing: New Horizon players or any Animal Crossing player for that matter. When a villager threatens such aesthetics with his or her… wet mustache or goldy locks? Or when they can’t keep their noses out of your business? That’s when there’s a problem.

*Update on February 17, 2021, by Sharnelle Earle: The Animal Crossing New Horizons fandom is full of perfectionists who are starting to get bored now that their islands are as perfect and as aesthetic as can be. Whether you’re the type of player who has restarted their island for the 10th time for a new experience or you’ve had the same island for a year, new updates rolling out soon will help your island feel alive and thriving once more.

The winter update of new emotes and furniture has now passed, but with the new Lunar year comes more holidays and updates brewing under the radar. On March 1, new Super Mario Bros items will be added to the game. This includes outfits, furniture, and more.

15 Coach - Old Man #1

Coach looks like he has a five o’clock shadow all the time. In a game mostly meant for kids that is played for it’s simplicity and childlike feel, you’re gonna feel standoffish towards villagers that appear older.

Having a gruff-looking villager look so similarly to an older man makes a lot of players uncomfortable, unfortunately. No matter his looks, though, you’ll regret hating any villager once they express sadness toward you. You can’t help but care for each and every one of them. But it’s still creepy.

14 Vic - Old Man #2

Vic has the exact same vibe as Coach. And Beardo. And Barold. Who is deciding to put 50-year-old men in the game?! Most of the Animal Crossing player base are femmes who want the cutest island possible whether that means goth vibes or lolita vibes.

When it comes to villagers with beards and an air of manly-nature, most people will want to pass and look for another villager instead. After all, why opt for Vic when you can get a Marshal instead?

13 Mice - Not Up To Par For Aesthetics

Animated mice (and real ones) are usually adorable – there’s no denying that. But half of these bad boys do look a bit….odd. Not that odd is bad, but since many who play New Horizons are perfectionists, that might be a problem.

If the mouse is not exactly up to par, it’s goodbye to them. Due to their quirky designs, many mice get cast aside without a second thought.

12 Buck - It’s Not Easy Being That Green

Buck doesn’t really fit any of the aesthetics you see of Animal Crossing New Horizons islands. Well, he might if you’re going for a grungy trash-island look. Which does exist and is a valid option; it just isn’t as common.

Besides, Buck isn’t a horrible looking villager by any means; he just doesn’t fit in. His green differs from the overall game color palette and he isn’t really shouting any theme for people to care or have him as a dreamy.

11 Anteaters - Except Anotonio, That Is

There are many times when a snout or, more preferably, a “snoot” is a good thing. Think of cute dogs or whimsical (if mischievous) ferrets. When it comes to island villagers, however, no one’s really a fan of that snout.

Antonio is the only exception when it comes to anteaters. The rest may fit into certain themes, but sadly enough people want cute cats and teddy bears rather than these boys. Especially because they are all brightly colored except two, so they come off as too much.

10 Diva - The Stand-offish Type

Though Diva is categorized as Sisterly, many feel she is Snooty and rude. Players all around don’t enjoy her as a villager if not because of her personality then because of her appearance.

A purple frog could be cute in theory, but Diva has the look of…a literal diva. Her glam look paired with a dour expression is confusing. It also doesn’t help players as it encourages the feeling that she’s a tad bit rude and uninteresting.

9 Harry - The Weird Beard

There are many unsettling villagers that people steer clear from and Harry is one of them. Harry would be alright if he did not have that immensely strange facial hair. That alone is the one thing stopping him from his true potential as a villager.

A mustard yellow hippo on its own can be very cute and sure some other featured could be added… But what shouldn’t be added to any villager is beards.

8 Beardo - Just Weird Overall Body Hair

Speaking of beards… Everyone in the Animal Crossing community feels uncomfortable near the grizzly beast that is Beardo. The fur on his stomach, or we assume it covers his whole stomach, unsettles people as it resembles…a certain patch of hair that belongs down there.

Along with his strange eyes, his mustache matching the hair down there, and the swooping sideburns that match nothing…No one really likes Beardo. Appearance counts for some things!

7 Dom - Don’t Give Me That Face

At first glance, Dom seems like a really adorable sheep with a bubbly personality. Dom is actually a hardcore Jock that loves the outdoors. The conflict from his pink and bright appearance to his work-out or die trying attitude can leave people feeling indifferent.

If a player is looking for Jocks, nine times out of ten, they aren’t necessarily expecting a pink villager that wears a rainbow shirt. Some people might treasure this genre-defying sheep, but it’s not a popular trend.

6 Gorillas - Same Problem As Anteaters

It’s gathered pretty quickly that a lot of players care heavily about the physical attractiveness of everything related to Animal Crossing. That includes the villagers.

Gorillas aren’t necessarily known for being beautiful, majestic creatures in real life. So you can bet your bottom dollar that they aren’t seen as such in the game. In fact, almost every player despises each gorillas’ appearance so much that they resort to attacking them with nets!

5 Barold - What Is With The Weird Facial Hair?

Barold is a step in the continuous wrong direction from the likes of Beardo. Still a bear yet smaller, Barold also has facial hair paired with unnerving eyes that leave players feeling highly uncomfortable.

If Barold’s appearance wasn’t enough to make players run for their lives, and it sure should be enough, his house is filled with thousands of surveillance cameras and technology. It’s jarring to think about what or who he’s working on, on that computer.

4 Hippeux - A Wet Toupe, Bro?

Hippeux may not have facial hair, but the little hair he does have is once more a no-go for players and anyone with eyes. It looks as though the hippo is wearing a fake head of hair that is constantly wet. His character color is also way too bright and his eyes are way too realistic compared to other villagers’ eyes.

Nothing about Hippeux’s appearance brings about a feeling of calm or safety. He looks like he’s about to insult you at any given moment and he has the Smug personality type so he just might.

3 Naomi - Not For People Scared By Coraline

There is something endearing about Naomi’s appearance because of her cute red spots, her makeup, and her clear taste for fashion. But when those eyes open… It’s a whole new, creepy, nightmare-fuel world.

She looks very cute and sweet, yes, but her eyes are sockets – iteral sockets – that look like they are covered with lipstick. Her eyes resemble her mouth to a T and that just can’t be legal.

2 Chops - He’s THAT Guy

Chops looks smug because he is Smug. No one likes a mug nor snooty person in real life or in video games as they tend to be insensitive and cruel.

Having the appearance of such can only be a disadvantage for them because first impressions are everything! Everyone knows that one professor who does not care about the students, sweeps his fake hair out of his face, and is always eating even though you aren’t allowed to. That’s Chops!

1 Chickens - Please Stop

This is the same predicament that the Gorillas of the franchise face. Yes, the chickens are more physically appealing over gorillas (perhaps both in-game and in real life). But their overall character design is a bit overwhelming.

They have a boring, broad shape with feathers that don’t actually feel like feathers. It’s all clunky and busy. The chickens of the game don’t look ugly per se, but they sure do look odd. Odd is enough to have people trapping them in fencing with the rest of the gorillas!
