Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been the game of 2020 so far, and the astounding sales of the Nintendo Switch seem to showcase that it isn’t slowing down any time soon. Animal Crossing as a series has always had mass appeal because it allows players to decorate and customize their own experience around their interests and preferences, but New Horizons exceeded everyone’s expectations.
Here, houses can have multiple rooms after upgrading and it’s up to the player to figure out the theme of each room when the time for decorating comes around. Problem is, New Horizons provides so many creative choices that some players don’t know what to do. Thankfully, there are a lot of amazing rooms to take inspiration from. Without further delay, here are the 10 coolest room themes that will inspire any Animal Crossing: New Horizons player out there who’s currently facing an art block.
10 Elegant Study
Those who grew up watching any British shows - or maybe the James Bond films - likely laid eyes on a study that caught their attention. The look of dark aged wood against old books and rustic furnishings is a style a lot of people like, as it emits nothing short of class.
Unfortunately, it’s often associated with the rich and famous, as most houses that have dedicated studies also happen to be mansions. Thankfully for everyone else, players can get the same type of study in their own Animal Crossing home, though some of the pieces might cost upwards of 100,000 Bells apiece.
9 City
This room theme may seem odd at first, especially for those who turned their islands into an urban landscape in the first place. Meanwhile, those who prefer a more natural aesthetic for their island will view the city room as a nice compromise that gives them that fix of a heavily populated city center without urbanizing their islands too much.
It’s also a great setup for photos, as players and their friends can pretend that they’re out for a stroll down the city, which is almost impossible right now given the current state of the world.
8 Laboratory
The laboratory is a solid theme because there’s a lot of variation possible, given the amount of science-related in-game items. Players can also make neat posters and such with the custom design slots and turn your lab into something even more personal.
Some of the more common ideas for a room that looks like a lab are ones centered on the study of insects, as well as others showcasing a Pokémon lab similar to that of Professor Oak’s. Stark white walls and floors mixed with gadgets and beakers will make any room feel like a lab in no time flat.
7 Cherry Blossoms
A cherry blossom-themed room may be tough to pull off for those who weren’t active near the game’s release, as the Sakura Event only happens for a very short time. However, those who were lucky enough to gain access to plenty of crafting recipes and items from the event will get the chance to embrace the beautiful pink leaf season.
Players can do this by either taking the nature and relaxation approach, or they could simply accent a living room or kitchen with the cherry blossom items and make it feel a bit more unique and quaint.
6 Arcade
Here’s the thing: everyone in Animal Crossing seems to be renovating a room into an arcade. Some go for the traditional idea of an arcade and fill it with gaming cabinets, while others mix in the feel of a diner and give it a restaurant vibe.
Remember that there are numerous items that would go great in a playroom or activity space. It’s up to the player to mix and match these items to find what gives off the vibe they’re looking for. Make the arcade feel like it’s the arcade of your childhood and/or dreams!
5 Under The Sea
Those who play long enough will find that the game has a fair amount of nautical and mermaid-themed items in it. Many people like to use the seashell archway as an entrance to their island near the airport, but it could also work inside a room in their home.
Players who enjoy going to the beach or maybe watching a deep ocean nature documentary on Netflix might want to try their hand at an underwater-themed room. After all, they could even recreate their favorite scenes from The Little Mermaid!
4 Forest Hideaway
Earlier, the idea of dedicating a room to feel like a city was discussed. For the opposite end of that urban vibe is a forest getaway, which makes for a stellar room.
New Horizons has several jungle and forest themed wallpapers that pair well with matching floors. Thankfully, the game lets players craft nature-themed items they can either choose to place around their island or move them indoors. Take this vibe even further and play the ocarina in-game while sitting in your forest hideaway!
3 Cozy Open Bedroom
Often, players will resort to using one of the smaller rooms for their bedroom. However, there are those who decided to take a different approach. The attic and basement both provide a lot more horizontal space, and users have shown how that extra space can make a bedroom feel a lot more open and free.
With so much space available, players will look to fill up space by taking the time to space things out and decorate accordingly. Doing so can turn an empty space into one that feels openly devoid of clutter and ideally minimalist.
2 Witch’s Den
A deeper dive into Animal Crossing’s section on Twitter will introduce players to the surprising world of witchcraft. The idea of making a personal witch den and living a life of magic and wonder is one that has floated around quite a bit recently.
Pairing an eerie and spooky room with an outfit and lighting that match helps bring the look together. For those who are into magic and especially those who love the world of Harry Potter, there are plenty of uplifting and joyous witch dens to take inspiration from.
1 Lively Kitchen
The idea of a kitchen may seem basic, but a glance at the reference above will show just how much personality can be injected into such a common setting. Some players choose to go with a more rustic and modern vibe like pictured above, whereas others prefer a ranch-inspired vibe with brick and open flame decorated the space.
Just because the kitchen is fairly common in both the real and digital world doesn’t mean it can’t be the most breathtaking area of the house. The toughest part about designing a nice kitchen is getting pieces that work well with one another but in the hands of the most creative players, a kitchen can look like a masterpiece!
