It’s surprising how many people are unaware of all the variables that go into the villagers for Animal Crossing New Horizons. Each one has their own personality quirks,  design aesthetics, catchphrase, and even temperament.

That’s right, each villager that can show up on the island in ACNH has their own permanent “mood” that they’ll be in, and it’s how people are getting islands full of wanna-be fashionistas and workout fanatics. So, among all the personality types known, which matches which Chinese Zodiac best?

8 The Dog: Normal And Sort Of Boring

It might be for the best to start things off with the “default” personality, so let’s look at the Normal villagers. Everyone in Animal Crossing is sugary-sweet nice all the time, and Normal villagers are just the bog-standard type of nice. But, they’re also a bit down on themselves and can be especially hard on their own self-worth, which is surprising. Normal villagers are usually female and are a bit more realistically normal in terms of everyday depression rather than Animal Crossing normal which would be way too peppy. And, funny enough, most if not all of these “normal” traits match perfectly with the Dog Zodiac. And yes, Coco, the soul trapped in a clay body, is considered a “normal” villager.

7 The Monkey: Peppy Yet Friendly

Those who represent the Monkey are known to be energetic/active social butterflies who have boundless confidence. And, consequently, Peppy villagers in AC are filled with endless energy, are always excited to talk to anyone, and are always gushing about their aspirations and interests.

Peppy villagers are a tad self-centered but are absolutely the most commonly friendly personality type in the game. In fact, they tend to annoy the more moody villagers (and sometimes the player) with their infinite positivity, making them perfect for the Monkey Zodiac.

6 The Dragon: Sisterly And In Control

Sisterly villagers act more like moms or big sisters than just plain old “sisters”. They’re natural-born leaders and show no hesitation about offering medicine or other items to the player character if need be. Like Dragons, they are wise beyond their years and succeed easily on their own. They sort of live in their own world and usually stay up late into the night working on whatever they’re currently focused on. Sisterly villagers are best for players just starting out as they like to give out items and help out the player. Like a Dragon, they feel like perfect role models that just seem to innate succeed at whatever they work towards.

5 The Rooster: Snooty But Progressive

There is one simple word that completely describes those under the Rooster Zodiac, extravagant. The Rooster loves to be the center of attention and will do whatever it takes to get there. People who fall under this Zodiac tend to be very in tune with pop culture, fashion, and anything related to stardom. They’re progressive, forward-thinking, and unique individuals who have a lot in common with those of the “Snooty” Personality type in ACNH.

The only thing different about these wonderful Snooty villagers is that they’re a bit more negative than most other personality types, which is surprising. They insult other villagers and the player character relatively often in the beginning before they open up to them. And, of course, they’re all about those overly expensive items.

4 The Snake: Cranky With Goals

Now, while the word “Cranky” might give players the idea that these deceptively cute villagers are nothing but negative, that’s not necessarily the case. Yes, Cranky villagers have a tendency to gossip about other people on the island, and yeah they take a bit to warm up to the player character. But, once they’ve decided to befriend someone, they go all in. Both Snake Zodiacs and Cranky villagers are focused on privacy, self-oriented, intelligent, and excel at communication but choose to say little. Snakes are very focused on their own goals and so are these Cranky villagers who spend all day outside their houses. Plus, Cranky villagers tend to have the best quotes.

3 The Ox: Jock’s Who Brag

Ox’s are known for their strength, both physically and mentally. They’re strong animals, and in terms of their traits, they focus on pure power and maintaining a good work ethic. So, it only makes sense to apply the Ox to Jock villagers, the personality type that brags about their workout routine every single hour of every day. Jocks are fantastic villagers to have on the island as long as the player doesn’t mind their constant humble brags, they’re very cheery and get along easily with most other villagers. The only bad thing about the Ox is its lack of communication finesse and stubbornness, two traits anyone who has a Jock Villager knows they share as well.

2 The Pig: Lazy And Lax

In a similar fashion to Cranky villagers, ones labeled as “Lazy” aren’t necessarily all bad. Quite frankly, a better label for them would be “Relaxed” villagers as they still get quite a lot done in a day, but they do it calmly. Lazy villagers are calm, mild-mannered, and just there to have a good time, which is perfect for the Pig Zodiac. Those born in the Year of the Pig are known to be responsible, cool under pressure, a bit slow to get started, and helpful. Pigs don’t really look for help for themselves, but they’ll help others out no problem. Lazy villagers in ACNH get along with any of the personality types that aren’t too high strung or energetic, and they’re perfect villagers for people who don’t want to micromanage their islands inhabitants too much.

1 The Tiger: Smug But Flirtatious

Finally, there is the Tiger. Out of all the Zodiacs, this is the one that shares the same descriptors on most sources, and these descriptors usually have something to do with terms like confidence, brave, snarky, and charming. Those born under the year of the Tiger are people who usually express themselves in ways different from the norm, and they’re fine with that. They don’t go back on their word and they don’t mind seeming over-confident or too into themselves. And, of course, Smug villagers are mostly the same. They’re a mix of multiple personality types like Peppy and Normal, but the most outstanding trait they show is that same overconfidence that got them the “Smug” identifier. These villagers are really the only ones that get a bit flirty as well, which just feels so weird in a game so G-Rated. Still, the shared overconfidence means that these Smug inhabitants were only ever going to align with the Tiger Zodiac.
