As with most online multiplayer games, Apex Legends is fighting a constant battle against hackers. Ban waves have come and gone, but the threat of cheaters remains ever-present, and lately, it has even gotten a specific name.
For the past several months, an Apex hacker by the name of Tufi has been running wild in high-ranked play. Called an “unbannable God” for his ability to both get aimbots and other cheats around Apex’s anti-cheat software and avoid direct consequences from developer Respawn Entertainment, Tufi has become an infamous name amongst the Apex Legends community.
As DotEsports reports, Tufi’s notoriety comes from his prolific use of cheats in high-ranked-play lobbies. He was allegedly involved in the DDoS attack on the EU’s GLL Esports tournament last month, where he also apparently hacked into player accounts to send taunts to rival players.
One such player, Lumonisity’s Shivam “ShivFPS” Patel, became so enraged at Tufi’s behavior that he went on an expletive-filled rant after finally killing him in-game. This resulted in a temporary Twitch ban for Shiv, which was all the more infuriating because Tufi seemed to once again avoid any negative repercussions.
However, Tufi’s days as the Teflon-coated Apex cheater may finally be coming to an end. Following the GLL Tournament DDoS attack, Apex streamer Tanner “Rogue” Trebb said live on-stream that Tufi was “in jail.” He later clarified that he was joking about Tufi being incarcerated, but he did tell DotEsports that he was “likely in big trouble.”
Respawn communications director Ryan K. Rigney stated last month that they’re aware of certain players getting around Apex’s anti-cheat programs and that Respawn is exploring all avenues to deal with the problem, up to and including legal action. “The situation sucks, for sure. But we think it makes sense to hold most comms (aside from posts like this) until we have a solid plan in place. TL;DR: Team’s on it.”
So far, Respawn has yet to respond to make an official statement.
