Season 6 of Apex Legends is just around the corner, and with it comes a brand new legend and a brand new gun. Respawn Entertainment skipped adding a new weapon in Season 5, but they’re back on the wagon for sure this time in Season 6. We’ve got a name, we’ve got a picture, and based on its existence in past games, we even have a pretty good idea of what it’ll do when you pull the trigger.
Let’s start with a name: Volt. It’s an SMG that uses energy ammo. How do we know it uses energy ammo? Because various datamines since Season 3 way back in September of last year have been pointing us towards an energy ammo-based SMG.
In fact, those datamines were the first to give us the name Volt, but they were very inaccurate as to when we would actually get the weapon in Apex Legends. It was first thought to arrive in Season 3, but instead we got the Charge Rifle. Then it was supposed to be the gun added in Season 5, and instead we got nothing. Now that Season 6 is here, EA has assured us we’re getting the Volt by outright saying so on the official website.
So what can we expect from the Volt? To find that out, look to past games produced by Respawn Entertainment–specifically, Titanfall 2. In that game, the Volt was a high fire rate SMG that shot blue energy bolts called “blue tracers.” It was deadly at close to medium range, but not so effective at long range. It also came with a built-in silencer, although the silencer really didn’t do a whole lot in terms of stealth.
The Volt had roughly the same damage as the Alternator, another weapon that can trace its roots to the Titanfall series. So if we had to guess, we’d say that the Volt will be an SMG with a similar damage profile to the Alternator, but is silenced, takes energy ammo, and fires fairly obvious blue ammunition.
Actual weapon stats will have to wait for Season 6’s arrival on August 18.
