They say knowing is half of the battle. And whoever “they” is – they’re correct. Trying to boot up Apex Legends and jump in against the best of the best on default settings is like swinging a bat at a piñata, blindfolded. Except that you have no bat, and the piñata is actually a swarm of murder hornets.
Okay, I’m exaggerating a little bit, but nonetheless – settings are very important. Unfortunately, there really is no clear way to figure out what the best metrics are for every annoying little slider in those gosh-dang menus. Luckily, there are some fantastic resources available for you to narrow down your preferences quickly.
Although a lot can come down to play-style and personal goals, a few general rules of thumb are good to know. First, most people are playing on either too high DPI (a general mouse setting) or too high sensitivity. The vast majority of professionals are playing with a lot of mouse mat room and regularly use quick, sweeping arm motions for macro movements. For example, TSM’s ImperialHal uses 2.00 in-game sensitivity with 400 DPI – quite low compared to many.
The next thing that significantly affects performance is establishing a consist framerate. You can’t control every variable, but professionals prefer to lower almost all of their “detail” sliders straight into the ground. If the world around you looks like it’s made of Play-Doh, then your computer will have an easier time rendering the environment around you.
Honestly, the best resource out there (by far) seems to be ProSettings’ breakdown on the subject. They’ve compiled data from almost every relevant Apex Legends professional on the market and have thrown it into one neat place. For those truly interested in the knitty-gritty details, check out their data.
To provide a bit of an anecdote, I started out on the first day of Apex’s release totally clueless. I was getting into fights with rocks and missing my shots, resulting in many cold showers and tears. After doing my homework, fixing my settings, and practicing – I achieved Apex Predator multiple times and even gathered some ALGS points! Suffice to say, if adjusting settings could save a hopeless case like me, you could be a few clicks away from perfecting your game.
