We may not be getting Breath of the Wild 2 this year, but Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm might be an alternative for Zelda fans when it releases in the fall for the Nintendo Switch.
This Switch release is a port of the Apple Arcade version from earlier in the summer, and it seems like an impressive mobile title based on reviews by both critics and players alike. The developer Cornfox & Brothers touts that it has over 20 hours of gameplay, side quests, and “massive” boss battles on its App Store page.
In addition, Cornfox just implemented a Golden Edition of Oceanhorn 2, which comes with new quests, items, and improvements to the game. It has two expansions, the Shield of Chronos and The Criminal Hunt, as well as a new ending that gives you more context to what happened to the characters. It will likely be more console friendly with an optional 60fps mode for higher-end Apple phones and more realistic water. New dialogue and songs were added too.
It’s likely the Switch version will be the Golden Edition of the game on Apple devices as it’s the most comprehensive version of Oceanhorn 2.
The sequel takes place a thousand years before the first title, as the dreaded Warlock Mesmeroth returns and brings a Dark Army with him. It is your task to unite all of the races of the world to fight back against this villainous threat in this adventure.
Unlike the majority of The Legend of Zelda series, you can call upon your allies to help you battle evil. You have the granddaughter of Arcadia’s Gran Regent and a robot called Gen by your side. They can be used to help you solve puzzles or they can be directed to fight alongside you with contextual commands.
While the animation and music aren’t as polished as a game like Breath of the Wild, Oceanhorn 2 shows promise. Despite it being a little on the nose with the costume design and sound effects, a new 3D action-adventure is welcome on a system with few first-party titles this year. The graphics are vibrant, the combat looks decent to carry the game forward, and the return to the old fashioned Zelda puzzle formula will likely be attractive for many.
