Today, Sony announced the release of a brand-new cooperative multiplayer shooter called Arcadegeddon. The game, which will be available on PS5 and PC, comes from Illfonic, the developer behind Friday the 13th: The Game and Predator: Hunting Grounds. Early access is available beginning today on both PS5 and PC via the Epic Games Store.
The trailer for Arcadegeddon debuted as part of Sony’s State of Play and shows off the colorful gameplay that this co-op shooter has to offer. In the game, players will have to go it alone or team up with friends to help save their favorite arcade from the horde of enemies bent on destroying it. To save the arcade, players will travel through unique and colorful biomes that offer fun areas, deadly weapons, hidden loot, tough bosses, and various minigames to enjoy. You can check out the trailer below:
Taking inspiration from the Muppets, Gorillaz, and 90’s punk rock, Arcadegeddon offers an art style that is truly unique and fun to explore. Jared Gerritzen, the Head of Creative & Design at Illfonic shared a bunch of information on the new shooter over on Sony’s official blog, including an official synopsis: “Gilly, the owner of a local arcade, is trying to save his business from a faceless mega-corporation. To do so he takes all the top arcade games and connects them all to make a super game, unfortunately, the mega-corporation, Fun Fun Co. hacks the game and injects a virus. You and your friends need to save the game and the last hometown arcade.”
As players traverse through the world of Gilly’s Arcade, they will encounter several “gangs” that will offer players an opportunity to earn street cred. These gangs each have their own leader with an individual style and a set of challenges to complete. Completing these challenges will grant players Surge Gauntlet Abilities that will be a big help in defeating the arcade’s enemies. Plus, you will gain some awesome skins to show off your own unique style and the invaluable street cred that shows you are not to be messed with.
Gerritzen also spoke on the biomes that players will get to explore. Each biome will have its own distinctive style and feel. While the Early Access has three biomes for players to play around in, Nerve Center, Mystic Isles, and Aftermath, Gerritzen hopes to officially launch with five biomes. He also spoke about the many weapons players will get to mess around with: “There are seven different types of weapon classes and about 28 different weapons to choose from at the start of Early Access. Weapons feature a range of effects from fire, electricity, freeze, nano-tech, and more.”
Arcadegeddon is sure to be a ton of fun when it officially launches next year. Until then, Early Access is currently available on PS5 and PC so grab some friends and get to shooting.
