As one of Ubisoft’s biggest-selling game series and one that has lasted for nearly fifteen years, the Assassin’s Creed series has gathered a rather large fanbase over the years that is always eager to jump into the next history lesson disguised as a video game. While many players have similar thoughts on the series as a whole, there are also others who have otherwise unpopular opinions on gameplay, story elements, and characters that they wish to make known.
One popular place where people can air their opinions is Reddit, where there are many threads dedicated to the player base’s thoughts on a particular game series, including the long-running Assassin’s Creed series. In this case, the opinions of these Redditors came from the thread titled “What is your most unpopular Assassin’s Creed opinion?”, and is just a small handful of the many unpopular opinions fans have about the series.
10 Assassin’s Creed 2 Hasn’t Aged Well
In most player’s eyes, the second entry in the Assassin’s Creed series is a high point for the entire franchise, despite how old the game now is. With better combat, traversal mechanics, and a generally more likable protagonist, there’s a lot of good reasons to skip the first entry and start with Assassin’s Creed 2. However, Churly92 thinks that, despite the overall quality of the game, it hasn’t aged particularly well when put beside newer games, not only in the same franchise but also when compared to modern games in general.
9 Assassin’s Creed 2’s Story Isn’t Good
One Reddit user, whose user has since been deleted, feels that, despite how fun the gameplay of Assassin’s Creed 2 is, the story isn’t as good as other titles and lets the game down from being truly great. While there are many games out there that are lacking in story but make up for it with gameplay, such as the Borderlands series, this is one opinion that many Assassin’s Creed fans don’t share, as many feel it is a large step up from the story of the first game.
8 Unity Was A Good Game
Until Assassin’s Creed Unity was released, the Assassin’s Creed series was an annual release that kept its player base engaged in the story despite the worry that the developers may be rushing through their work too quickly. This all came to a head with the catastrophic release of Unity, which was plagued with bugs, glitches, and an overall negative view by critics and players.
Despite this, Reddit user Arthur_box thinks that Unity was, all things considered, a better game than most give it credit for. While the game is in a much better state than it was when it first released, it’s hard to ignore how the game played and looked when gamers first got their hands on it.
7 Origins’ Story Wasn’t Good
Following the disaster that was Assassin’s Creed Unity and the lukewarm reception of its follow-up, Syndicate, Ubisoft took the development issues with the series to heart and spent time perfecting the next iteration. Their next release, Assassin’s Creed Origins, was seen by many fans as a return to form for the series and far superior to the games that preceded it in both gameplay and story. Qwert1225, on the other hand, thinks that, despite the improvements to the gameplay and series quality, the story of Origins wasn’t as good as many make it out to be, as many gamers enjoyed the fact that it centered around the origins of the Templars and the Assassin’s Brotherhood.
6 Assassin’s Creed Should Move To The Present
Although the Assassin’s Creed series focuses on many historic events seen through the lens of a modern observer, the majority of the story takes place in the past, with those in the present simply using the information gleaned from those past events for their own gain. Reddit user AlexWFS believes that the series should abandon this focus on the past and center around the present-day events, as they find them much more interesting than the historical elements. While there may be a few gamers that can relate to this opinion, it is clear that the historical story elements are the main draw for the majority of Assassin’s Creed’s player base.
5 Feudal Japan Wouldn’t Make A Good Setting
For quite a while, fans of Assassin’s Creed have been waiting for the series to make its way into feudal Japan, as many believe that the samurai setting would make an excellent backdrop of the series. Someone at Sucker Punch apparently agreed, as Ghost of Tsushima seems to take many elements of the Assassin’s Creed series and is set in this particular era in time. CustosMorum, on the other hand, thinks that Japan wouldn’t make a good setting, as the series has historically centered around western cultures and influences, and taking the setting to the east may not be the most approach for the story going forward.
4 The Modern-Day Segments Aren’t Good
While some fans of the series, such as AlexWFS, believe that the series should abandon the historical elements in favor of a modern setting, Reddit user Afuneralblaze has the opposing opinion, feeling that the modern-day segments are low points in the series and should be abandoned going forward.
It’s easy to see why Afuneralblaze has this opinion, as the majority of gameplay in the Assassin’s Creed series takes place inside the Animus, but this would also remove one of the most interesting parts of the series in the process.
3 Sailing Isn’t Fun
Assassin’s Creed 3 was something of a mixed bag for many of the series’ fans, as players felt that it was a step backward from the quality game of Assassin’s Creed 2. This especially became the case after the release of Black Flag, which many saw as even better than its predecessors in no small part due to its sailing and ship battling mechanics. Reddit user thattoneman, however, feels that the sailing aspect of Black Flag and Rogue weren’t as fun as many others believed and ruined the gameplay experience for them as a result.
2 There Hasn’t Been A Good Villain Since Assassin’s Creed 3
While there’s little to be desired about the villains in the original Assassin’s Creed, many fans believe that the villainous roles have only become stronger over the years, though not everyone feels the same way. Reddit user thebluick, contrary to many other fans, feels that there hasn’t been a good villain in the series since Assassin’s Creed 3, a game that many fans of the series feel is lacking compared to most others.
1 Ezio Is Overrated
It’s fairly well recognized by long-time Assassin’s Creed fans that the protagonist of Assassin’s Creed 2, Ezio, is the best protagonist in the series so far, as they are a much more likable character than Altair and resulted in Ezio returning for several games before Ubisoft finally decided to move on. That being said, apparently, not all fans feel the same as Reddit user deskrod believes that Ezio is overrated and not nearly as good as many of the other protagonists in the series.
