Patch 1.0.4 is here for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and it’s a big one. On Xbox Series X and S you can expect to download 5.3GB. Things are much better on the PS5 where the download is a mere 2.5GB, and everywhere else is somewhere in between these two extremes.

So what’s with the enormous patch size? Well, update 1.0.4 is an enormous patch. It provides more bug and glitch fixes than Ubisoft can even count, a whole host of QOL improvements, and two brand new graphics modes to choose from on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

We’ll start with the two graphics modes, which are appropriately titled Quality and Performance Mode. On Quality Mode, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will aim for a solid 30fps and attempt to display as close to 4K as often as possible. Thanks to the game’s dynamic resolution, it will drop below 4K if the PS5 or Xbox Series X struggles to render a lot of complex action, so limiting things to 30fps will hopefully keep that high resolution.

Performance mode aims for a smooth 60fps, but will dynamically scale below 4K more often. This means complex battles or scenes with a lot of foliage and lighting will be noticeably lower resolution than Quality Mode.

By default, both the Xbox Series X and PS5 are set to Performance Mode, while the Xbox Series S defaults to Quality Mode. However, in the smaller Xbox’s case, the target resolution is 1440p.

Patch 1.0.4 addresses various graphical, audio, lighting, and texture issues, adds several QOL improvements, and improves stability and performance across the board on all platforms. You can read the full patch notes over on the Ubisoft forums, but we’ve picked out the best fixes right here:

  • Fish in Norway will now spawn in bad weather. Yeah, we had to read this one twice too. Crows will no longer randomly fall from the sky in Asgard. Bad omens, huh? Addressed an issue where dogs would start levitating when Eivor starts to pet them. NPCs will now react to the player stealing…so think twice before stealing!

There’s no mention of the living training dummies or the weird Japanese blood issue, so we assume those fixes are coming in a later patch.
