Ubisoft’s Forward presentation showed off a number of huge games yesterday, including Watch Dogs: Legion, Far Cry 6, and the publisher’s first dive into the battle royale scene with Hyper Scape. However, the game that got the most comprehensive look was Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, with the next entry in the iconic series seeing the battle between the Assassins and the Templars shift to the Viking period.
Yet, this won’t be the only Assassin’s Creed narrative fans will be getting this year. Recently announced by Dark Horse on Twitter, it appears Valhalla will be getting a prequel story in the form of a brand new comic book titled Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Song of Glory. It will launch on October 21 later this year.
The tweet itself doesn’t reveal too much about the story’s context or what it will focus on, although it does show off the comic book’s cover. The graphic on the front sports both playable protagonists from Valhalla, with the male and female versions of Eivor taking center stage. It stands to reason that the character will be the focus of the spin-off comic book, with the prequel likely establishing their backstory in the lead up to embarking on a voyage to England where the new game will be set. Although the cover illustration doesn’t necessarily dictate exactly how the comic will look, the art style appears to channel a more realistic aesthetic, with both versions of Eivor being depicted in detail.
As for Valhalla itself, it seems as though the game is shaping up to be one of the boldest Assassin’s Creed stories to date, with brand new gameplay mechanics, stunning visuals, and an extremely dense open-world. Players will be able to sail through the seas in a similar fashion to Assassin’s Creed: Blackflag, with the option to disembark at any point and raid nearby towns and villages with their trusty Viking crew. Alongside that, it seems there will be a huge emphasis on base-building and management, with Eivor’s home settlement expanding based on the player’s raids.
It’s sure to be yet another financial goldmine for the company when it hits shelves later this year. It won’t be alone though. Despite many believing that Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed would begin to alternate years to allow for more development time, it appears Watch Dogs: Legion will drop this October. Evidently, Ubisoft is looking to close out the year with a bang as it drops two of its biggest franchises at the same time.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will release November 17 on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
