No matter how the quality of an Assassin’s Creed game might turn out, it’s for certain that there will be memorable quotes to be found in each entry. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla has continued this tradition, with each main character receiving at least one instance where their quotes had a deeper meaning.
These tend to sum up the character’s personality, as the quotes reflect how they lived and died. It’s also worth checking these out due to the game’s enormous campaign mode, which makes it easy to overlook dialogue that should have been heard for the quality behind the words uttered by the characters.
10 “What Profit Does Open War Bring?” - Styrbjorn
The Assassin’s Creed series has long since stopped caring about historical accuracy. What Valhalla got right, though, was the practice of kings pledging to more powerful kings in order to create allegiances and merge lands together.
Styrbjorn did the same but was lambasted by his son Sigurd and Eivor. Sigurd accused his father of being weak, but Styrbjorn argued that there was nothing to gain from going to war with a much stronger enemy. He was most definitely right but sadly couldn’t gain the respect of his son for this move.
9 “It Is A Wise Leader Who Considers The Needs Of Others.” - Sigurd
For the most part, Sigurd was an awful leader who got his delusion to his head and began looking down on Eivor and the others. In the good ending of the game, he finally saw reason and agreed that he wasn’t strong or wise, as he nearly led everyone to ruin.
To this end, he conceded that Eivor was a better leader than him as she had put the needs of the Raven clan before herself, unlike what Sigurd had done. With this quote, Sigurd went some way in redeeming respect for himself.
8 “It’s A Pleasure To Meet You At Last.” - Desmond
The fate of Desmond remained an unresolved mystery for about a decade before Assassin’s Creed Valhalla confirmed what became of him. He ended up as a being called the Reader, who greeted Eivor when she became trapped with him.
These were simple words from Desmond but were still memorable since they were the first we heard from him in so long. It also confirmed that Desmond remained in some shape or form, and his calm attitude meant his mentality had greatly matured by this point.
7 “Let’s Get Going. A Few Billion Timelines Might Take A While.” - Layla
Due to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla being a massive game, many players might not even have reached its ending. Those that did get this far saw Layla bow out from the series, as she resolved to team up with Desmond to find a way to stop the next catastrophe from happening.
Although she was trapped with no way out, Layla signed off on a hopeful note as she was fine with the prospect of exploring billions of timelines to figure out a solution for humanity’s dilemma. It was confirmation that she was ready to take up the responsibility she’d struggled with for so long.
6 “You Bested Me. Yet, I’m The One Left Standing.” - Basim
The backstory of Basim being the reincarnation of Loki was one of the best storylines from the game. After Eivor defeated him, Basim remained trapped for over a thousand years before he was released by Layla and tricked her to escape in her place.
Upon returning to Eivor’s resting place, Basim got his moment to gloat since he could now access Eivor’s memories and find out her secrets. It only took more than a thousand years for this antagonist to taste the sweet nectar of victory.
5 “I Feel Somewhat Trapped. In This Room, In This Settlement, In This Life.” - Randvi
There’s a massive map to explore in this game, but Randvi’s role primarily remained to be in the settlement and plan out the allegiances. Due to this, she began exhibiting signs of depression as it wasn’t the life she ever thought she’d have.
Randvi seemed like a one-note character, but that was only because she was bottling up her emotions and not voicing them out. At this moment, she did confess to Eivor that she was feeling trapped and there’s no doubt this confession was cathartic for her.
4 “Mint Tea Is Not Actually Tea, Becs. It’s An Infusion…It’s Really Just Dirty Minty Water.” - Shaun
The comedic factor was lacking in Assassin’s Creed for a long time, save for the unintentionally funny glitches. Shaun’s return after a long break brought the funny side of the series back, as he continued with his penchant for quips and snarky remarks.
It was unclear if he was still the funny guy as before, that is until he threw this comment out and confirmed he was the Shaun that fans remembered. The quote also confirmed the romantic dynamic between Rebecca and Shaun, something that had been theorized for several years.
3 “I Will Make You Beg As Your Father Begged, Wolf-Kissed.” - Kjotve
Kjotve didn’t last long in the main story, but it was his act of taking the life of Eivor’s father that set her on the path of vengeance and shaped her angry personality. Kjotve didn’t become any modest over the years, as he openly boasted he would kill Eivor like he had her father.
This was the best quote to get players fired up since the villain’s loud mouth was just begging to get shut. Not to mention how the rest of the game featured relatively sedate baddies, making Kjotve’s antagonism stand out more.
2 “My Long Road Ends Here. The Valkyries Approach.” - Ivarr
The continued trust Eivor placed in Ivarr seriously brings question to her logic. Ivarr was a total brute who only knew to take lives violently and feel glee from it. This is why it felt liberating to finally be able to battle and finish Ivarr out when he tried to attack Eivor.
In his final moments, Ivarr figured he would be going to Valhalla since he had perished in battle, even imagining Valkyries arrive to take his soul. In some way, his belief was admirable, although it was also fun to deny him Valhalla as well.
1 “I Will Not Be Captive To Another Man’s Gaudy Design. My Destiny Is Mine To Weave.” - Eivor
The dominant trait Eivor possessed was her reluctance to play by the rules. She had a number of memorable quotes that highlighted her personality, although none more so than this one. Considering her fate was changed when her father was killed, it’s understandable why she hated following orders.
While she was very hotheaded, her reliance on her own instincts allowed Eivor to see the reality behind Basim’s facade and be successful in foiling his plans. In the end, this is why she proved to be the true leader of the Raven clan.
